ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Craig Paquette got another big hit to end another strange game.

Mark McGwire passed Mike Schmidt with his 549th homer and Paquette followed the second rain delay of extra innings with a
three-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles
Dodgers 9-6 Friday night.
The first delay lasted 22 minutes and came before J.D. Drew's game-tying, two-out single in the 11th.
The second lasted 19 minutes with runners on first and second
and one out in the 12th. Paquette, who also had the game-winning
single in the ninth Thursday, then connected off Jeff Shaw (2-4)
for his seventh homer, giving the NL Central leader its ninth
victory in 11 games.
The count was 2-2 before the delay.
"I had two strikes, I had to go up there hacking," Paquette
said. "He threw a slider and left it over the plate. It's the best
feeling there is."
Shaw endured both delays.
"Anybody will tell you that's not a fair situation for Shaw," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "We got the best of it and took advantage."
Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said he left Shaw out there
because Terry Adams had a tight arm.
"That kind of takes a little out of a pitcher," Johnson said.
"It was a tough one to lose. We could see it coming, but there
wasn't anything we could do about it."
Three minutes after the game ended, another downpour scattered
what fans remained.

McGwire tied Barry Bonds for the major league lead with his 27th homer, connecting on a 1-1 pitch from Matt Herges leading off the
eighth, a drive to straightaway center estimated at 411 feet.
"The whole world wants to see him go deep, flashbulbs and all
that stuff," Herges said. "But you can't be scared. I'm not
scared."
McGwire hit No. 548 Thursday against the Giants' Shawn Estes,
and has hit four homers in his last six games. Up next is Reggie
Jackson at 563.
Gene Stechschulte (1-0), called up earlier in the day to replace
the injured Jesse Orosco, allowed two walks in two scoreless
innings.
"He did a great job," manager Tony La Russa said. "I'm going
to pass out a very well done."
Paul LoDuca, who entered as a pinch runner in the ninth, homered
off Dave Veres leading off the 11th to put the Dodgers ahead 6-5.
Shawn Green's three-run homer off Matt Morris in the top of the
eighth had given the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. Green has reached base in
54 consecutive games.
Gary Sheffield homered for his fourth straight game, giving him
eight in 10 games and 25 this season. Adrian Beltre also homered
for the Dodgers.
Andy Benes struck out 10 for the third straight game, and Drew
also had a two-run homer and threw out a runner at the plate for
the Cardinals, who lost for only the third time in 11 games.
Benes allowed five hits in seven innings, striking out his last
batters and retiring the final nine. Of the staff-high 19 homers
Benes has allowed, 13 have come with the bases empty.
Drew's 12th homer in the fifth of Chan Ho Park snapped a 2-2
tie. He also had a perfect one-hop relay to the plate on Park's
two-out hit in the fourth to easily throw out Beltre. In the top of
the 12th, he robbed Gilbert of extra bases with a diving catch in
right center.
Park, who allowed four runs and four hits in six innings, had
won his previous five starts. He walked his first three batters he
faced, complaining about footing on the rubber, and McGwire
followed with a two-run single.
Game notes
Dodgers C Todd Hundley (rib cage) began a rehab assignment
Friday night at Triple-A Albuquerque. Barring a setback, he is
expected to rejoin the Dodgers at home on Monday. ... The Cardinals
lead the major leagues with 123 homers. ... Sheffield had 25 hit in
his last 49 at-bats with eight homers, five doubles, 18 RBIs and 16
runs. ... Mike Piazza had the previous best Dodgers' home-run total
before the All-Star break, hitting 24 in 1996.
