ATLANTA (AP) -- Like his teammates, Terry Mulholland has a hard
time defining Andruw Jones' worth to the Atlanta Braves.
| | Terry Mulholland went sevein innings and picked up the win for the Braves. |
Mulholland, who won for the fourth time in six starts as the
Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 Thursday, escaped a
bases-loaded, two-outs jam in the second when Jones made a diving
catch to his left on Mark Grace's line drive to center.
"Most guys, when you give up a ball like that in the gap, you
figure you've got to back up third in case the guy's got wheels,"
Mulholland said. "But Andruw just hauls in everything. It's a big
plus having a guy like that out there."
A Gold Glove winner the last two years, Jones preserved a 2-2
tie.
"When a left-hander hits the ball, especially from a
left-handed pitcher, you know the ball's going to go away," Jones
said. "I got a good jump on it. I wanted to catch it so bad,
because Grace has made so many plays on me at first. I told him it
was my turn this time."
Mulholland (7-6) scattered 13 hits -- reaching his career high
for the third time in three starts. He allowed four runs.
Glenallen Hill, who went 2-for-4 against Mulholland, improved to
.478 against the left-hander with an RBI single in the first and
leadoff homer in the seventh.
Hill was robbed of extra bases leading off the fourth as Jones
sprinted far to his left and hauled in the ball in deep
right-center.
"I watched all last year as he was making those kinds of
plays," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "He's pretty special."
Mike Remlinger pitched the ninth for his seventh save in nine
chances, getting the final out when right fielder Brian Jordan made
a diving catch of Joe Girardi's sinking liner with one on.
"I had to take a chance of being a hero or a billy goat,"
Jordan said. "We needed something. If that ball gets through,
they've still got life."
Sammy Sosa, the subject of trade rumors, went 3-for-4, getting
his 1,500th career hit in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.
Chicago's other run came on Jose Nieves' leadoff homer in the
second.
Quilvio Veras, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, hit his
eighth career leadoff homer and his RBI single in the fourth put
Atlanta up 6-2.
Scott Downs (3-2) did not return after a 33-minute rain delay in
the fourth. After going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his previous four
starts, Downs gave up six runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in 3
1/3 innings.
After Veras' leadoff homer, Jones tripled and scored on Andres
Galarraga's double-play grounder.
Atlanta took advantage of a pair of errors in the third. Veras
reached on Nieves' fielding error, moved up on Downs' wild pitch
and scored when Girardi's pickoff attempt glanced off Eric Young's
glove and into center field. Young was charged with his eighth
error, fourth-most among NL second basemen.
Reggie Sanders followed with a two-run single, driving in
Galarraga and Jordan for a 5-2 lead. Despite having only .181
average, three homers and 11 RBI in 166 at-bats, Sanders believes
he is turning things around.
"I feel like I'm getting it going," said Sanders, who did not
play in the first two games of this series. "I talked to Bobby
(Cox), and he said he's going to be getting me out there more
often."
