Hentgen pitches St. Louis to 5th straight

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jim Edmonds hit two home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals spoiled Orel Hershiser's return to the Los Angeles rotation with a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers on Friday night.

Pat Hentgen (6-6) pitched into the seventh inning, giving the Cardinals their fifth straight victory.

Hershiser (1-3), returning from a self-imposed stint in the minors after a slow start, was charged with five runs and six hits in four-plus innings. It was his first appearance with the Dodgers since May 9, when he pitched in relief at Arizona.

The 1988 Cy Young winner, who returned to Los Angeles this season after a five-year absence, was removed from the rotation after getting shelled for seven earned runs in 1 1-3 innings on April 19 against Houston.

Hershiser, who grounded out with the bases loaded to end the fourth, left in the fifth with the score tied at 3, two runners on base and no outs.

Reliever Matt Herges struck out Mark McGwire and Ray Lankford, but Eric Davis and Mike Matheny had RBI singles. Davis finished with three hits.

Hershiser retired his first two batters of the game before giving up Edmonds' homer to right-center. He then hit McGwire in the lower back with a 2-2 pitch, walked Lankford and surrendered an RBI double by Davis. Lankford also scored on the play, as right fielder Shawn Green tried to throw out Davis at second.

Edmonds hit his 20th homer with two outs in the ninth, an opposite-field drive to left off Mike Fetters. It was Edmonds' first multihomer game for the Cardinals.

Dave Veres pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

Eric Karros closed the gap to 3-1 in the second inning with his 19th homer -- and third in his first four career at-bats against Hentgen.

Hentgen walked Dave Hansen with one out in the fourth and then issued a two-out intentional walk to Alex Cora. Hershiser grounded to third for an inning-ending force.

Hentgen, traded to St. Louis by Toronto last November, has posted victories in consecutive starts for the first time since winning his first three outings with the Cardinals.

Game notes
Davis needs eight more RBIs for 900 in his career. ... The intentional walk to Cora was only the fifth all season by St. Louis pitchers, the fewest in the NL. ... Reliever Al Reyes, whom the Dodgers acquired from Baltimore on Tuesday in the Alan Mills trade, was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Catcher Adam Melhuse was recalled from the Dukes. ... Hershiser already has hit 10 batters in just 21 2-3 innings this season, including a major league record-tying four on April 19 against Houston. One more and he'll match the number he had last season in 179 innings with the New York Mets. Hershiser has now plunked at least 10 batters in five consecutive seasons. ... Edmonds is 5-for-14 lifetime against Hershiser, with three home runs. ... Hentgen, who singled in the fourth, is 8-for-26 at the plate and leads rookie Rick Ankiel for the most hits among St. Louis pitchers.
