PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jason Boyd
broke a bone on his pitching hand when he slammed his glove on the
bench in the dugout after a poor outing Wednesday night.
Boyd gave up five runs in 2-3 of an inning in an 8-1 loss to the
Florida Marlins. He allowed three hits and three walks after
entering the game with Philadelphia trailing 3-1.
Boyd was taken to a hospital after the game and appears to be
headed for the disabled list. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.05 ERA.

Alex Gonzalez, who entered the game batting .160, had a
career-high five RBIs and Ryan Dempster pitched a four-hitter as
the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1.
"Ladies and gentleman, we have a shortstop," Florida manager
John Boles declared after Gonzalez's offensive outburst. "Welcome
back Alex Gonzalez. He had a great game. He was patient up there
and had some real good at-bats."
Gonzalez, who started 0-for-2, had two doubles and a triple. He
gave Florida a 3-0 lead with a two-run double in the fifth. He
added a bases-loaded triple in a five-run eighth.
Gonzalez, who batted second for the first time since April 30,
had six previous three-RBI games.
"I got an opportunity to see more fastballs," he said. "I
felt better batting second. If I'm seventh Friday, I'll try to do
the same thing."
Mark Kotsay, who normally bats second for Florida, had the night
off.
Dempster (7-4) struck out seven and walked three in his second
complete game of the season.
The 23-year-old right-hander struck out Bobby Abreu and Scott
Rolen after Ron Gant hit a one-out triple in the first. He allowed
just two baserunners in the first four innings and retired 12 of 13
batters at one point.
His father had a rare chance to see him pitch.
"To have my father here was great," Dempster said. "He'd only
seen me pitch three times and the last time I went 3 1-3 innings at
Colorado. I'm just glad he was here, especially so close to
Father's Day."
Preston Wilson gave Florida a 1-0 lead, leading off the second
with his 13th home run of the season, a shot to straightaway center
on an 0-2 pitch from Randy Wolf (6-4).
Wolf allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings. He had
won five of six starts.
"There've been some games when the offense has helped me.
Things even out," Wolf said.
There were so few fans in attendance on a rainy night at
Veterans Stadium that the Wolfpack -- a group of mask-wearing Wolf
fans -- could be heard yelling encouragement from their upper deck
seats in deep left field. The announced crowd was 14,472.
The Marlins gave Dempster a three-run cushion in the fifth when
Mike Redmond doubled with one out and moved to third on Luis
Castillo's two-out infield single.
Both runners scored on Gonzalez's drive off the left-field wall.
"He's having a tough time," Phillies manager Terry Francona
said about Gonzalez. "We fell behind him 2-0 twice in this series
and he ends up hurting us. I'd rather see somebody else beat us."
Pat Burrell led off the fifth with a double to the gap in
left-center for the first clean hit off Dempster -- Gant's triple
bounced out of Wilson's outstretched glove.
The Phillies cut it to 3-1 on a RBI double by Rolen in the
sixth. Rolen, who struck out in his first two at-bats, was 3-for-21
since coming off the disabled list before lining a double down the
right-field line to score Doug Glanville, who had walked.
Florida added five runs off Jason Boyd in the eighth. Mark Smith
had a two-run double and Gonzalez capped the scoring with his
triple.
Game notes
Florida's seven extra base hits were a season high. ...
Rolen exchanged words with home plate umpire Dan Iassogna after
getting called out on strikes in his first two at-bats. ... Florida
is 5-2 against the Phillies this season after going 2-11 last year.
... Gant extended his hitting streak to 11. ... Wolf has allowed a
home run in all but one of his 13 starts. ... After reaching base
safely in 38 straight games, Cliff Floyd did not reach base for the
second straight game.
