Cordero caps comeback with 10th-inning HR

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- With John Rocker stuck in the minors -- at least through Tuesday night before he was later recalled -- the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied off Atlanta's bullpen.

Pittsburgh scored three runs in the ninth to tie the game and won it 7-6 on Wil Cordero's leadoff homer in the 10th inning Tuesday night.

It was a rough day in all for the Braves' bullpen, as Rudy Seanez left with tightness in his right arm and headed back to Atlanta for tests, Mike Remlinger blew his first save of the season, and Don Wengert (0-1) allowed the game-winning homer.

"Rem threw good," manager Bobby Cox said. "He just made one bad pitch. He had the guy 0-2 and he got the ball in a bad spot."

All of this happened with Rocker back in Richmond. But the Braves later placed Seanez on the the disabled list and recalled their controversial closer.

Rocker was sent down to Triple-A Richmond to work on his control both on and off the field. The day before he was demoted, Rocker threatened the reporter who wrote the story about the reliever's bigoted views on foreigners, gays and minorities.

The Pirates bounced back from one of their worst losses of the season with perhaps their most satisfying win.

"I don't think it's redemption because we should have won the first game," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said one night after his team blew an 8-3 lead to Atlanta and lost 10-8. "It didn't make up for last night but it's a good win."

Cordero hit a 3-2 pitch from Don Wengert into the left-field seats as Pittsburgh got its 16th come-from-behind win among 28 victories this season.

"That situation is exactly why we got Wil," Lamont said. "He gets big hits in big situations. Wil is a professional hitter, he studies pitchers and he has a good idea of what he wants to do when he goes up there."

Jose Silva (5-2) pitched the 10th for the win as the Pirates beat the Braves for the first time in five tries this season.

Pittsburgh tied the score 6-6 with three runs in the ninth against Remlinger, who had been perfect in six save opportunities.

Kevin Young led off with a double and John Vander Wal walked. Young moved to third on Luis Sojo's grounder and scored when Bruce Aven beat out a possible double-play ball.

"That's something that will get overlooked but if Bruce isn't hustling the way he did, the game is over," Lamont said.

Pinch-hitter Mike Benjamin doubled off the right-field wall, missing a home run by a foot. Warren Morris lined a single to center on an 0-2 pitch, and Benjamin scored the tying run just ahead of Andruw Jones' throw.

"I had a left-handed hitter 0-2," Remlinger said. "I had three pitches to get him. I tried to get the ball either outside or on the paint and it caught too much plate."

Jones hit his third homer in two days, and Brian Jordan added a two-run shot for Atlanta.

The Braves roughed up 23-year-old Bronson Arroyo in his major league pitching debut, getting 10 hits and five runs off him in five innings.

Young had three RBI, giving him nine in two games against the Braves.

Arroyo opened the game by giving up consecutive singles to Quilvio Veras, Jones and Chipper Jones to account for one run. He got a break when Andruw Jones was thrown out at third base.

The Braves were trailing 2-1 in the third when Jordan hit his 12th homer, one out after Chipper Jones' single. Javy Lopez and Bobby Bonilla hit consecutive doubles to give Atlanta a 4-2 lead.

Chipper Jones had an RBI groundout in the fourth, and Andruw Jones hit a solo homer, his 17th of the season, against reliever Josias Manzanillo in the sixth.

Morris and Jason Kendall singled, and Brian Giles walked to load the bases in the first, and Young followed with a two-run single. Young added an RBI groundout after Cordero's leadoff double in the sixth.

Game notes
Atlanta starter John Burkett, a 10-year veteran from nearby Beaver, Pa., still draws family and friends. He left 69 tickets. Burkett allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. ... Chipper Jones started at shortstop as Rafael Furcal went on the DL, and Walt Weiss has a thumb injury. ... Arroyo was the third member of the Pirates' 1995 draft class to reach the majors. OF Chad Hermansen was demoted to the minors earlier this year, and pitcher Brian O'Connor came up from Double-A Altoona for one start. ... Arroyo was the 20th pitcher the Pirates have used this year, including backup catcher Keith Osik, who mopped up in a game. Pittsburgh used 19 pitchers last season.
