MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Jason Bere remembered the last time he pitched against Montreal. So did the Expos.

Both sides agreed that he was much better on Monday.

Bere won for just the second time in 11 starts since April 13, allowing three hits in 6 1/3 inning Monday night to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Montreal Expos 8-1.

"They were the same team that pretty much embarrassed me," Bere said. "I was able to locate my fastball throughout the game. I was able to move the ball around, especially to their bigger hitters. It made my offspeed more effective."

Bere (4-5) struck out struck out seven, getting past the fifth inning for the first time in four starts. On May 5, the Expos pounded him for nine runs in five innings, winning 10-2.

"He's not the same guy we beat around the last time," Montreal manager Felipe Alou said

After winning his first two starts, Bere didn't get another win until beating Houston on May 22.

Curtis Leskanic and David Weathers completed the five-hitter.

Montreal stranded a runner on second in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Bere walked two batters with one out and was relieved by Weathers, who retired Peter Bergeron on a fielder's-choice grounder and Trace Coquillette flied out.

"That was big, especially when we put up some runs on the board," Bere said. "When you score runs you need to be able to show teammates you can hold the lead."

Raul Casanova had three hits and three RBI, tying career-highs.

"They threw me some pitches to hit and I took advantage of it," he said.

Milwaukee extended a winning streak to three for the first time since May 22-23 thanks to a three-run fourth off Javier Vazquez (6-3).

Vazquez gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings as the Expos lost for the fifth time in six games.

"He pitched good enough, just didn't get enough support," Alou said.

Geoff Jenkins doubled home Marquis Grissom in the fourth and scored on a double by Jose Hernandez, who came around of Raul Casanova's single for a 3-0 lead.

Milwaukee added an unearned run off Matt Skrmetta in the sixth when the pitcher walked Charlie Hayes, then made a two-base throwing error on Casanova's grounder. Santiago Perez's sacrifice fly made it 4-0.

Geoff Blum hit an RBI single off Weathers in the eighth. Casanova and Ron Belliard hit two-run doubles off David Moraga in the bottom half.

The start was delayed 26 minutes because of rain. ... Montreal 1B Lee Stevens did not play because of a strained hamstring he injured Sunday against Toronto. ...
