PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks know how to end a losing
streak. Just send Randy Johnson to the mound.
| | Randy Johnson struck out eight to tie Mickey Lolich for 13th on the career strikeout list with 2,832. |
Johnson allowed three hits in six innings to become the National
League's first 10-game winner Friday night as the Diamondbacks
snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Anaheim Angels
4-1. Toronto's David Wells also has 10 wins (10-2).
"It was just good to have the big guy back out there for us,"
said outfielder Luis Gonzalez, who hit his fourth home run in five
games. "He's a mental lift for us. If we're scuffling, he's the
guy who usually stops the bleeding for us."
Johnson (10-1) struck out eight to tie fellow left-hander Mickey
Lolich for 13th on the career strikeout list with 2,832. Steve
Carlton is the only lefty to strike out more. Johnson walked one
and hit a batter.
Johnson, who missed his last start after receiving a cortisone injection to relieve soreness in his left shoulder, left after throwing 101 pitches.
"It's just hard to believe he's having shoulder trouble,"
Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. "He showed no signs of it."
The six-inning stint was his shortest outing of the season.
"I felt fairly sharp, not knowing what to expect when you
haven't pitched for about eight days," Johnson said, "but it was
a great win obviously for the situation we've been through."
Johnson, who said his shoulder felt fine, is 7-0 with a 0.98 ERA
at home this season.
Manager Buck Showalter said it wasn't a difficult decision to
take Johnson out after six innings.
"It's not tough when you think about playing the rest of the
season without him," Showalter said. "Our bullpen was rested with
the off day and Randy had given us what he's capable of. I think we
all knew he was capable of going out there and pitching another
inning, but he was hitting and I just felt like that was the right
time."
Vicente Padilla, Dan Plesac and Byung-Hyun Kim blanked the
Angels over the last three innings. Kim got his seventh save in
nine chances.
Anaheim's only run came on a 457-foot homer by Troy Glaus in the
second inning. The blast, which landed in the dining area outside
Friday's Front Row restaurant far beyond the left-field wall, tied Ron Gant for the third-longest in Bank One Ballpark. It was Glaus'
18th home run of the season.
"He throws hard. He provided a lot of it, believe me," Glaus
said. "I just hit it in the right spot. He throws 97, you've got
to be looking for a heater. If you're looking for something else,
you're doing the wrong thing."
Angels first baseman Mo Vaughn committed two errors, one costing
a run.
Brian Cooper (2-2), in his fourth start since being recalled
from Triple-A Edmonton, allowed three earned runs and six hits in
five innings. He struck out one, walked three and hit a batter.
Tony Womack tripled into the right-field corner with one out in
the fifth, then scored on Jay Bell's single. Gonzalez followed with
his 15th homer, on Cooper's first pitch, to make it 3-1. Steve
Finley broke a 1-for-11 slump with a two-out double. Turner Ward
followed with a one-bouncer to first, but Vaughn threw wildly past
the bag as Cooper tried to cover, allowing Finley to score.
"The key to that inning was Womack getting that triple,"
Gonzalez said. "He's our table setter. When he gets it going and
creates some havoc out there, it gets the rest of us going, too."
The Diamondbacks, back for a brief three-game homestand after a
1-5 trip, loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but failed
to score when Kelly Stinnett hit into a double play.
"We struggled the whole road trip with runners in scoring
position," Gonzalez said. "We left a lot of men on base. To us,
this wasn't the prettiest game, but the bottom line is we won."
Game notes The Diamondbacks traded utility man Andy Fox to Florida for
outfielder Danny Bautista, who is to be in uniform for Saturday's game. ... The Diamondbacks activated Travis Lee from the DL (groin
pull), and he started at first base. ...The only home runs hit
farther at Bank One Ballpark than Glaus' were by Scott Rolen and
Matt Williams. ... Anaheim's Darin Erstad went 0-for-3 to end his
eight-game hitting streak. ... Johnson struck out the side on 12
pitches in the first inning.
