MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Jamie Brewington won for the first time in five seasons, pitching 2 2-3 hitless innings Wednesday night as the Cleveland Indians extended their winning streak to five by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 9-5.

Brewington (1-0), who relieved with the bases loaded in the first, had not won since leading San Francisco over Colorado on Sept. 28, 1995. The 28-year-old right-hander has a 7-4 career record.

Richie Sexson and Russell Branyan each homered for Cleveland, which completed a three-game sweep.

Cleveland took a 4-0 lead in the first off Jason Bere (3-5) when shortstop Santiago Perez muffed David Justice's popup for a run-scoring error and Sexson hit his 10th homer, a three-run shot.

Paul Rigdon, making just his second career start, lasted just 26 pitches in the bottom half, allowing the Brewers to tie.

Jose Hernandez and Tyler Houston walked with the bases loaded, and Geoff Jenkins and Marquis Grissom hit RBI singles. Rigdon, activated before the game, had been on the 15-day disabled list since May 27 with a strained left muscle.

Brewington relieved after a walk to Houston, then got Bere to hit into a inning-ending double play.

Cleveland took an 8-4 lead in the second. Roberto Alomar's two-run double chased Bere, Justice hit a run-scoring double and Juan Acevedo hit Sandy Alomar in the back with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Bere allowed seven runs in 1 1-3 innings, his shortest start since April 17, 1999, when he got just one out against Pittsburgh while pitching for Cincinnati.

Branyan hit a solo shot in the fourth off Curtis Leskanic.

Pinch-hitter Luis Lopez had an RBI single off Justin Speier in the fifth.

Notes: The Brewers placed RHP Jeff D'Amico on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Tuesday, with rotator cuff tendinitis. ... The first inning took 40 minutes. ... Brewington batted twice in the second. He walked to lead off and then hit an inning-ending flyout. ... Kenny Lofton, who also broke a bat in the fifth, reached on a broken-bat single in the third, but the barrel of the bat sailed into the stands and hit a young girl sitting in the fifth row. Despite getting hit in the head, she refused to leave her seat. Ushers kept her supplied with ice during the rest of the game. ... Speier singled to lead off the fifth, his first hit of the season. He is 2-for-4 in his career. ... With Houston being blanked 2-0 by Minnesota, the Indians and Cincinnati are the only teams in the majors not to be shut out this year.
