PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- After trying to do too much with one swing, Mike DiFelice did just enough in his last swing.

DiFelice hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the 10th inning Tuesday night, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3.

"I took a big hack 2-0 and I could hear everybody screaming, 'Relax. Make contact,' " DiFelice said. "I was just trying to do something positive. I just happened to be up there. It could've been anybody on the team."

Jeff Brantley (1-1) walked Jose Guillen leading off the 10th and, one out later, walked pinch hitter Steve Cox. DiFelice then lined a 3-2 pitch to the gap in left-center, helping Tampa Bay win three straight for the first time since last September at Yankee Stadium.

Rick White pitched a perfect 10th for his second save of the season, and second in as many nights.

Philadelphia played its third straight extra-inning game and fourth in five games, going 2-2. The Phillies last played three consecutive extra-inning games in August 1991.

"I thought Brantley threw a couple pitches right where he wanted to," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "That's the way the game goes sometimes."

Roberto Hernandez (2-2), who had converted four straight save chances after blowing four in six opportunities, allowed a game-tying RBI single in the ninth to Kevin Sefcik after Doug Glanville reached on a throwing error by second baseman Miguel Cairo.

Glanville was nearly thrown out at second on the play, but shortstop Felix Martinez dropped the throw as the umpire was signaling an out. Sefcik then bounced a single up the middle.

"It was just a bad throw," Cairo said about overthrowing first base. "It rolled out of the bottom of my hand. But right now everything is going good for us."

Tampa's Bryan Rekar allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Rekar, who was 7-for-52 in his career, broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the sixth but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. It was Rekar's second career extra-base hit, the first since he doubled for Colorado in 1996.

"I got lucky. The ball hit my bat and found a good place," Rekar said.

Rekar failed to get down a sacrifice in his first two at-bats.

"If he can't bunt, hit him," Tampa manager Larry Rothschild said.

The Phillies, who have been in the NL East cellar for nearly the entire season, swept AL East-leading Boston before losing twice to Tampa, the worst team in the majors.

Tampa Bay took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Jose Guillen and a sacrifice fly by Vinny Castilla.

Cliff Politte allowed three runs, five walks and eight hits in seven innings -- a career high. He pitched out of trouble early and stranded seven runners in the first four innings.

Politte, acquired from St. Louis in November 1998, made his first start as a Phillie and his first in 25 months. He was called up from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre last Friday to replace the ineffective Paul Byrd.

"I thought I had something to prove," Politte said. "I want to stay up here. I wanted to show I could throw strikes. I wanted to make an impression whether I'm here for the long run or not."

The Phillies cut it to 2-1 on an RBI single in the third by Mickey Morandini. Sefcik tripled to left-center with two outs and scored on Morandini's liner to right.

Kevin Jordan tied the game at 2 in the fourth with a two-out, solo homer.

Rookie 1B Pat Burrell struck out in his first two at-bats. He had fanned seven times in nine at-bats before flying out in the sixth. ... Fred McGriff walked in the fifth after thinking he had struck out on a 1-2 pitch that was called a ball. McGriff grimaced and took a step toward the dugout before realizing the pitch wasn't a strike.
