TORONTO (AP) -- Pedro Martinez called it a bad day.

"I wasn't consistent at all," he said after allowing three
hits in seven innings Wednesday night as the Boston Red Sox beat
the Toronto Blue Jays 8-0.
Martinez, who pitched a two-hitter against Baltimore last week,
improved to 7-1 with a major-leading 0.90 ERA. He struck out six,
walked two and hit two batters.
"I was a little bit erratic," he said. "I couldn't spot my
fastball, and it would take off on me. I would throw a couple of
good ones, but then I would struggle with it."
Martinez has given up one earned run in his last 32 innings.
Helped by three double plays, he combined with relievers Brian Rose
and Tim Young on a four-hitter.
"It didn't look like he had a bad day to me," Toronto's Alex
Gonzalez said. "He kept us off balance all night. He did a really
good job."
The Red Sox kept Toronto from homering at SkyDome for just the
second time this season. The Blue Jays are averaging more than six
runs a game at home.
Trot Nixon hit a pair of RBI doubles as Boston finished 6-1 on
their road trip.
"Even though the results were real good today, all the credit
should be given to my teammates. They gave me all the lead I
needed," Martinez said. "I would have been in a lot of trouble if
it was 0-0."
Boston has outscored opponents 46-10 since All-Star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra came out of the lineup last Friday because of a strained left hamstring.
The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first on Nixon's RBI double
and Darrin Fletcher's run-scoring passed ball.
Boston added four runs in the third against Chris Carpenter
(3-5). Nixon and Troy O'Leary hit RBI doubles and Carl Everett and Wilton Veras hit run-scoring singles.

Martinez has won 14 of his past 17 starts. ... The Red Sox
have won nine of their past 11 games. ... Boston C Jason Varitek
missed his third straight game because of bronchitis. ... Everett
returned to the lineup after missing five games with strained right
quadriceps. Everett was the DH. ... Plate umpire Mark Carlson
ejected Toronto third base coach Terry Bevington for arguing balls
and strikes. Manager Jim Fregosi had to hold Bevington back as
Bevington jawed with Carlson. ... Donnie Sadler went 3-for-4 for
Boston. ... Boston CF Darren Lewis left the game in the third
inning with a strained left hamstring.
