MONTREAL (AP) _ Lee Stevens homered for Montreal and Sammy Sosa made a critical three-base error in the Expos' 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night.

Rondell White's bases-loaded single to the right-field corner in the fourth inning rolled past Sosa for an error, allowing all four runners to score to make it 7-1.

Mike Thurman (1-0) gave up one run and five hits in 5 1-3 innings in his first start of the season.

Kerry Wood (1-2) allowed seven runs _ five earned _ on six hits, struck out six and walked four. Wood made his first start against Montreal since his major league debut for Chicago at Olympic Stadium on April 12, 1998.

Dustin Hermanson, moved to the bullpen to replace injured closer Ugueth Urbina, entered with runners on first and second in the eighth and got the last four outs for his first major league save.

Stevens' towering shot over the right-field wall came off Wood in the second to give the Expos a 1-0 lead.

The Expos scored two more in the bottom half of the third on Peter Bergeron's RBI triple, and Jose Vidro's sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Cubs manager Don Baylor was ejected by home plate umpire Derryl Cousins when he argued after Wood walked Geoff Blum _ his third walk of the inning _ to load the bases in the third.

In the fourth, Lenny Webster had an infield single and moved to second on Eric Young's error. Thurman walked on a full count, and Bergeron had a bunt single to load the bases. After Vidro struck out, White's hit and Sosa's error cleared the bases to make it 7-1.

Todd Van Poppel, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, relieved Wood and allowed one hit in 2 2-3 innings. He struck out three in his Cubs debut.

Chicago scored twice in the seventh to close to 7-3. Sosa hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Steve Kline and Henry Rodriguez, and Shane Andrews drew consecutive walks to force in a run.

Anthony Telford relieved and got pinch-hitter Glenallen Hill to fly out to right to end the threat.

Vidro had an RBI double in the eighth to drive in the Expos' eighth run.

Notes: The Cubs re-acquired OF Dave Martinez from Tampa Bay on Friday for LHP Mark Guthrie and cash. Martinez, drafted by the Cubs in 1983, returns for his third stint in Chicago. He made his major league debut with the Cubs from 1986-88 and played with the White Sox from 1995-97. ... 1B Mark Grace is traveling with the team, despite having been placed on the DL on Thursday with a strained left hamstring. ... Urbina, who was placed on the 15-day DL Friday, had an arthrogram performed on his injured right elbow. ... Montreal's Andy Tracy went 0-for-3, including two strikeouts, in his first major league start at third base. ... Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero tried to throw out Joe Girardi at first on his single to right leading off the fifth.
