NEW YORK (AP) -- Steve Trachsel doesn't pay any attention to his mound opponent until after the game is over.

"After the fact, definitely," said Trachsel, who extended his scoreless-innings streak to 17 as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the New York Yankees and Orlando Hernandez 1-0 Thursday night.

	Steve Trachsel didn't go the distance, but he did notch his second straight 1-0 victory.

It was the second straight 1-0 victory for Trachsel (3-2), who gave up three hits, struck out five and walked one in seven innings. In his previous start Saturday, he beat Boston and Pedro Martinez with a complete-game shutout at Fenway Park.

Even though he has beaten Martinez and Hernandez, two of the best pitchers in the American League this season, Trachsel seemed more impressed by the environment.

"I'm glad I got a chance to pitch in these historic parks before they remodel them or start tearing them down," said Trachsel, who felt his confidence growing as the game progressed.

"When you feel good and you're hitting your spots, your confidence really builds."

Trachsel threw 104 pitches, 69 for strikes, but told Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild he felt a little tired. Trachsel was relieved by Albie Lopez, who allowed one hit the final two innings for his first save.

"We just decided it would be better for Albie to go out and start the inning," Trachsel said. "I told him (Rothschild) I could go out to start it, but I wasn't sure I could finish."

Fred McGriff, who had not homered in 67 at bats, hit a 2-1 pitch from Hernandez (4-2) into the right-center field bleachers with one out in the seventh for the game's only run.

Clay Bellinger, who replaced Derek Jeter at shortstop for the Yankees when Jeter strained an abdominal muscle, gave Trachsel and the Rays a big scare with a drive to the top of the left-field wall in the sixth with a runner on. Left fielder Greg Vaughn leaped to make the catch.

"I thought that ball was out of the park," Yankees manager Joe Torre said.

But Bellinger didn't think so.

"I didn't hit mine that well. I was out in front of it, a curveball. He threw a lot of curveballs."

Hernandez, who has given up eight home runs in his last four starts, allowed seven hits in nine innings, striking out six and walking two. He is now 4-1 lifetime against Tampa Bay.

Trachsel, held the Yankees hitless until Bernie Williams singled with two outs in the fourth. Williams moved to second on a wild pitch, but Trachsel got Tino Martinez to ground out.

Trachsel retired the next five Yankees before Chuck Knoblauch blooped a double to right field with one out in the sixth. Bellinger followed with his long drive to left.

After Paul O'Neill's infield single moved Knoblauch to third, Williams grounded out to end the inning.

Tampa Bay had at least one baserunner in every inning from the second to the fifth on four hits and a walk, but none advanced as far as second against Hernandez. After Vinny Castilla singled to open the fifth, Hernandez retired the next six Devil Rays before McGriff homered.

Jeter left the game after the second inning with an abdominal strain. The team listed him as day-to-day.

The game was a makeup of one postponed from Wednesday night, when heavy rain struck the New York area at gametime. ... McGriff's home run extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the Devil Rays' longest this season. ... Tampa Bay has now pitched five shutouts this season, most in the majors ... Trachsel, signed as a free agent in January by Tampa Bay, made his first career start against the Yankees after making more starts (186) than any Cubs pitcher in the 1990s. ... Jeter flied out in his only at bat, extending his hitless streak to 13 at-bats in the last four games.
