Sexson's 3 hits, 3 RBI key Tribe win

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO -- Richie Sexson might have ended two slumps on the same day.

Sexson had three hits and three RBI as the Cleveland Indians stopped their six-game losing streak with a 8-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Sexson, who had 31 homers and 116 RBIs last season, came in with just two RBIs and one home run. When he hit a two-run double in the first, he doubled his RBIs total for the season.

"The bat feels good in my hands again," said Sexson, who had three hits Friday. "I'm just in one of those grooves."

Omar Vizquel thinks the Indians, who are near the bottom of the American League in nearly every major offensive category, are turning their offense around.

"We lost on Friday, but at least we got 20 hits and got something going," he said. "As long we get our confidence back we're going to be OK."

Homer Bush's RBI double gave Toronto a 6-5 lead in the seventh, but Einar Diaz hit a two-run single in the eighth. Toronto starter Chris Carpenter left after walking Jim Thome, and Paul Quantrill (0-1) gave up a hit to Sexson and walked Travis Fryman. Diaz then singled to right.

"If I get my job done, I put an end to that inning and we probably win the ball game, but I didn't do it," Quantrill said.

Toronto reliever Pedro Borbon made it 8-6 when he hit Sexson with a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth.

"I think Richie's off and running now," interim manager Grady Little said. "He even got an RBI when he was hit by a pitch."

Ricardo Rincon (1-0) pitched one-third of an inning for the win.

Steve Karsay pitched the ninth inning for his fifth save, getting the final two outs when Raul Mondesi hit into a double play with runners on first and second.

"I got into trouble, but I pitched around it and got the win," Karsay said. "We desperately needed the win."

Jose Cruz Jr. hit his 12th homer of season. Cruz's fifth-inning homer off Jaret Wright put him into a tie for the major league lead.

Bush's double came after Scott Kamieniecki's pickoff attempt sailed past first baseman Jim Thome, allowing Cruz to advance to third on the error.

Down 5-3 in the sixth, Toronto's Carlos Delgado tied it with a two-run shot off Wright, Deglado's 11th homer this season.

Cleveland took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on consecutive two-run doubles by Sexson and Fryman.

Darrin Fletcher's RBI double and Marty Cordova's run-scoring groundout cut it to 4-2 in the second.

Notes: Diaz is hitting .447 (21-for-47) since replacing Sandy Alomar in the starting lineup. Alomar, on the 15-day-disabled list with a strained right hamstring, could rejoin the Indians on Monday. Alomar caught four innings in a rehab start in Winter Haven. ... Diaz had a career-high five hits on Friday night. ... Kenny Lofton played catch with a young boy before the game. The kid threw harder than Lofton. "He's pretty good," Lofton admitted. ... The Blue Jays have homered in 13 straight games. ... Attendance was 23,732. ... Carpenter gave up six runs and eight hits in 7 1-3 innings.
