KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Chris Fussell, banished to the minor leagues last month with a 6.19 ERA, returned Friday night to pitch a career-high seven innings and lead the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox 5-1. Joe Randa had three hits and two RBIs, and Mike Sweeney doubled, homered and drove in two runs for the Royals, who raised their home record to a league-best 12-4. Randa has 12 RBIs in his last 10 games. Fussell (2-1), optioned to Triple-A Omaha on April 26, replaced injured ace Jose Rosado, a two-time All-Star who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of tendinitis in his left shoulder. In his second major league win, his first as a starter, Fussell allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked three. Chicago stranded 10 runners. Jose Santiago finished with two-hit relief. Cal Eldred (2-1), trying to win three consecutive starts for the first time since 1994, allowed five runs and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings. Johnny Damon doubled in the first inning _ the eighth straight game he's led off with a hit _ and scored on Sweeney's double. Kansas City made it 3-1 in the third on Mark Quinn's run-scoring double and Randa's RBI single. In the fifth, Carlos Febles singled, stole second and scored on Randa;s single. Carlos Lee hit a solo home run in the second for the White Sox, who hit five home runs on Wednesday against Toronto. Sweeney hit an 0-2 pitch for an opposite-field homer in the seventh. Jermaine Dye then chased Eldred with his league-leading 13th double. Notes: RF Jeff Abbott made a fine catch of Dye's drive in the first, jumping high at the fence and snaring the ball, which was only about a foot short of flying out. ... Royals C Brian Johnson made a poor play in the third. Jose Valentin broke from third when Chris Singleton hit a chopper in front of the plate. But Valentin, caught in a rundown, made it safely back to third when Johnson's throw to Randa at third bounced at his feet in the dirt. The Royals escaped damage when 1B Dave McCarty made an outstanding play on Greg Norton's grounder for the third out. He was not charged with an error.
