Sacrifice sinks M's, ends Twins' skid

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A lazy fly ball finally won it for the hardworking Twins. Cristian Guzman hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and Minnesota stopped a five-game losing streak, defeating the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Wednesday night.

"The infield was playing in so I was just trying to hit the ball back to the outfield," said Guzman, who was looking first-pitch fastball and got it.

Jacque Jones went 3-for-3 with a walk and Corey Koskie homered for Minnesota, which almost blew a three-run lead for the second straight night.

"We were on a five-game skid, and we'll take anything we can get," Matt Lawton said.

"The bottom line is we got off the schneid," manager Tom Kelly said. "We've been losing some tough games."

The Twins improved to 5-4 in one-run games this season, and won their first extra-inning game in two tries.

"They've got a good bunch of scrappers," Seattle starter Brett Tomko said. "They do a little bit of everything."

With one out in the 10th, Jones singled off Jose Mesa (1-2) to start the rally. Pinch-hitter Midre Cummings and Denny Hocking followed with consecutive singles load the bases.

"That guy comes in, almost from his sleep, and gets a hit," Lawton said of Cummings, who has five hits in 12 pinch-hit at-bats.

Guzman then lifted a fly ball to left field and Jones scored standing up, ahead of the relay.

Eddie Guardado (2-1) pitched a perfect 10th inning for the win.

Trailing 4-1, the Mariners scored a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie it at 4.

Raul Ibanez had an RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-2.

In the seventh, Mark McLemore and Stan Javier hit one-out singles. With two outs, John Olerud hit an RBI single off Brad Radke, and Edgar Martinez, who had three hits, had a run-scoring single off reliever Bob Wells.

"These are the games you really want to get," Olerud said. "It's disappointing to lose a close one like that."

Javier hit an RBI triple off Radke in the third to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Todd Walker had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning. Koskie made it 3-1 with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Tomko in the fourth.

Walker hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 4-1.

Minnesota had a three-run lead after five innings Tuesday night against Seattle, but lost 5-4.
