OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Chris Carpenter pitched 7 1-3 strong innings and Carlos Delgado homered as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 Wednesday night.

Delgado homered for the eighth time this season, boosting the Blue Jays' total to 43, a club record for April.

Carpenter (2-3) allowed Jason Giambi's two-run homer in the first inning but recovered to shut down the A's the rest of the way. He gave up five hits in winning his second straight decision.

Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Omar Olivares (1-3) lost his third in a row. He went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.

Alberto Castillo's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie. Tony Batista and Alex Gonzalez singled to set up Castillo's drive to center.

Delgado connected off reliever T.J. Mathews with two outs in the seventh.

The A's took a 2-0 lead in the first when Terrence Long hit a leadoff double and Giambi followed one out later with an opposite-field drive into the left field seats. It was Giambi's eighth homer of the season.

Toronto came back in its half of the second. Brad Fullmer singled to start the inning and after Batista flied out, Marty Cordova walked and Gonzalez and Castillo followed with consecutive RBI singles.

Notes: Gonzalez snapped an 0-for-11 skid with his first-inning single. ... Fullmer singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. ... Toronto's 43 home runs in the month was one more than the Blue Jays hit in April 1996. ... Oakland RHP Kevin Appier was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday at Minnesota to give him a couple extra days rest to recover from a strained right forearm. He left his last start in the eighth inning Monday night after incurring the injury. Appier will now pitch on Tuesday in Kansas City in what will be his first appearance against his former team. ... The A's concluded a six-game homestand and now embark on a season-long 12-game road trip that begins Friday in Minnesota.
