Marlins beat Pirates with sac fly in 14th

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MIAMI (AP) -- Danny Bautista put a quick end to a long game.

Bautista hustled for a leadoff double in the 14th inning, then made a headfirst slide home on Mike Lowell's shallow sacrifice fly to give Florida a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

"The moment I hit the ball I was thinking two bases," Bautista said. "With a strong hitter like Lowell at the plate, I knew I had a good opportunity to tag and score on anything he hit in the air."

Bautista, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the 11th, doubled off the glove of shortstop Pat Meares and took third on a sacrifice by Alex Gonzalez. Mark Kotsay was intentionally walked and moved up on defensive indifference, and Preston Wilson walked.

Lowell followed with a short fly to center, with Lowell beating Bruce Aven's two-bounce throw from shallow center field. Although catcher Jason Kendall caught the ball, he dropped it as he tried to tag a sliding Bautista.

"I was looking for the angle, I saw that the catcher moved a little and that allowed me to get in," Bautista said.

Vic Darensbourg (1-0) pitched a scoreless 14th inning to earn the win. Mike Williams (0-1) took the loss in a game that lasted 4 hours, 31 minutes.

"It's nice to win a game when it goes that deep," Florida manager John Boles said. "Both bullpens were spectacular."

Darensbourg was 0-8 in his first two seasons with the Marlins.

"It was a long day, it feels good to get my first win out of the way," Darensbourg said. "To win a long game like this was the topper. It became a battle of the bullpens."

Florida used all of its position players and was forced to use pitcher Alex Fernandez as a pinch-hitter in the 13th with runners on first and second and two outs. Jason Christiansen struck out Fernandez looking.

The Marlins loaded the bases with one out in the 11th, but Brad Clontz retired Kevin Millar on a short liner to center and struck out Bautista.

Pittsburgh had runners at second base in the 12th, 13th and 14th innings but could not score.

"We had a few chances but we just couldn't score," Pittsburgh manager Gene Lamont said.

Starters Jimmy Anderson and Ryan Dempster both settled down after allowing early runs.

The Pirates scored twice in the first off Dempster. Kendall led off with a single, Meares doubled and Brian Giles had an RBI groundout. Kevin Young followed with a run-scoring single.

Lowell singled and scored on Mike Redmond's two-out infield single in the Marlins second. In the third, Alex Gonzalez walked and scored on Preston Wilson's two-out single, tying it at 2.

The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but reliever Dan Miceli retired Young on a popup.
