GAME LOG
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Dave Veres didn't take long to redeem himself
for the St. Louis Cardinals.
| | Mark McGwire needs 69 more home runs this season to tie his major league record. |
One day after being roughed up for two runs in one-third of an
inning, Veres bounced back Saturday to strike out four of the five
batters he faced and earn his first save as a Cardinal in a 10-8
victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
"The splitter was working a little better," Veres said.
"Plus, I think the shadows helped. I'm just glad we won the
game."
Until Veres showed up, it had been a day for the hitters. Mark
McGwire hit his first home run of the year and Fernando Tatis went
3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Cardinals. Jeromy Burnitz hit
two homers for Milwaukee.
McGwire's homer off Jim Bruske leading off the sixth went an
estimated 424 feet into the right center field bleachers and gave
the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. It was career hit No. 1,499 for McGwire.
Fernando Vina had four hits, including two triples, and two runs scored against his former team. He was traded from Milwaukee to St. Louis this offseason.
"I've had good starts in April before," Vina said. "I'm just
going out and playing. This game can humble you quickly, so I just
got to keep working hard."
Darryl Kile (2-0) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his second straight win.
Burnitz homered off Kyle to lead off the third, and hit one off Jesse Orosco with one out in the eighth to give him five for the year. It was his second multi-homer game of the season. Burnitz
also had a double.
Steve Woodard (0-1) gave up six runs -- four earned -- and 10 hits in five innings for the Brewers. Woodard struck out five and walked four. He also drove in Milwaukee's first run with a bases loaded
sacrifice bunt.
Pitching wise, Woodard said it was not one of his better efforts.
"It was just one of those days where I didn't have it," he
said. "I'm supposed to keep it close, and I didn't really do
that."
The Cardinals then scored four more times against the Milwaukee
bullpen.
"I've been very encouraged by our relievers so far," Lopes
said. "The relief pitching wasn't very good for either team."
Woodard was victimized by his defense in the fourth. With
runners at first and second and two out, Woodard got Jim Edmonds to
ground weakly to second. But second baseman Ron Belliard booted the
ball for an error to keep the inning alive, and Tatis followed with
a two-run single to make it 6-4.
All four of Tatis' RBI came with two out.
"That's kind of a continuation of what he did last year,"
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "He had an awful lot of big
hits for us then."
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by
Edmonds and Tatis. Milwaukee came back to take a 3-2 lead in the
second on Woodard's sacrifice bunt and Marquis Grissom's two-run
single.
St. Louis got the lead back in its half of the second on RBI
singles by Vina and Edgar Renteria. The Cardinals got two more runs
in the sixth on pinch-hitter Thomas Howard's two-run double. Tatis
added an RBI single in the seventh.
Milwaukee scored three times in the seventh on two bases loaded
walks and a hit batter by Cardinals reliever Mark Thompson.
Game notes The Brewers had their six-game winning streak against St.
Louis snapped. ... Tatis, the only Cardinal to hit in every game,
extended his hitting streak to five games. ... If the Brewers can
win Sunday's series finale it will mark the first time in team
history that the Brewers have started on the road with two series
victories. ... The Cardinals have scored 20 runs with two outs. ...
Ray Lankford is 4-for-22 hitting in the third spot in front of
McGwire. ... Woodard entered the 1999 All-Star break with 10 wins
but has won just once since.
