LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Juan Guzman, who hadn't pitched since March 18 because of tightness in his upper back, gave up 11 runs and eight in 3 2-3 innings of a 15-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Guzman threw 82 pitches without pain in the spring training finale for both teams. The results were secondary, Guzman said. His health was the main issue.

``Physically, I felt fine. That's what I was looking for,'' said Guzman, who was signed as a free agent by the Devil Rays this past winter. ``I was able to make my pitches, and I feel good physically. I threw 82 pitches and I feel good. I'm not worried about any (physical) effects.''

He gave up three runs in each of the first two innings and five in the fourth on home runs by Juan Gonzalez and Damion Easley before he was relieved by Juan Rosario.

``I thought he threw the ball better than he has this spring,'' Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said. ``His velocity was better.''

Rothschild said as long as Guzman is healthy, he'll pitch.

``There's a ways to go yet, but as long as he's healthy, he'll be fine,'' Rothschild said. ``The only way to get him on track is to pitch him.''

Three of the five runs in the fourth were unearned because of an error by second baseman Miguel Cairo on what could have been an inning-ending double-play grounder.

Gonzalez followed with a three-run homer, his sixth of the spring, and Easley later hit a two-run homer. Easley finished the spring with a .440 batting average, seven home runs and 17 RBIs.

Billy McMillon hit a solo homer in the seventh and Wendell Magee hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Detroit. Jim Buccheri hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay in the eighth.

Gonzalez, suffering from a sore right hamstring, played as the designated hitter for the second straight day. Tiger manager Phil Garner said it's possible Gonzalez could do the same when the Tigers open the regular season Monday night in Oakland.

Detroit starter Jeff Weaver pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out eight.

``It's taken me a couple of starts this spring, but I feel sound mechanically,'' Weaver said.

Although Weaver is the Tigers' fifth starter, he'll begin the year in the minors. He'll make one start in Toledo before being recalled for his first major league start of the year on April 15 in Detroit against Tampa Bay.
