SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Non-roster player Jake Thrower went 2-for-2 and drove in the winning run as the San Diego Padres overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Anaheim Angeles 8-7 Saturday.

With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Thrower hit a ground ball to shortstop Benji Gil and Eric Owens scored from third base ahead of the throw for the deciding run off Shigetoshi Hasegawa

Al Martin hit his fourth homer of the spring and Wiki Gonzalez had his third to help the Padres (16-14-1) closed their spring schedule with a winning record for the fifth straight year.

Mo Vaughn hit a grand slam for his fourth home run and Garrett Anderson added his sixth homer to stake Anaheim to a 7-2 lead in the fifth.

San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman worked a scoreless ninth for the win.

The Padres tied the score at 7 in the eighth on a two-run error by second baseman Adam Kennedy on a ground ball hit by Gonzalez. The two-our rally started when Mark Petrovsek gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases.

Vaughn broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with a one-out drive off Matt Clement over the left-field fence after the Angels loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single. Anderson hit his solo shot one out later to tie Tim Salmon for the team lead in homers.

Clement gave up seven runs and four hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked five.

Anaheim starter Kent Mercker, who had earned the win in his previous three outings, gave up one run and one hit in two innings with one strikeout and one walk.

This was Mercker's third start and sixth appearance of the spring.
