PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Jamie Moyer is as ready as he can be for his first opening night assignment.

Moyer went six strong innings for the Seattle Mariners in a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

``What do you think? Do you think I'm ready?'' the left-hander said after striking out eight. Then he said he thought he was ready to do battle with Boston's Pedro Martinez next Tuesday at Safeco Field.

Moyer, who has a total of 46 victories for the Mariners the past three seasons, allowed three runs on five hits and a walk.

``That happens sometimes. I don't go out and expect that,'' he said of his eight strikeouts. ``Actually, I'd rather have them put the ball in play earlier in the count and get more ground balls than the strikeouts. I don't know how many I had, but it tends to run your pitch total up real quick.''

Matt Stairs of the A's hit a two-run homer that barely got over the fence into Oakland's bullpen in the sixth that gave Oakland and Kevin Appier a 3-2 lead. Jason Giambi had an RBI double off Moyer for the A's first run in the third.

``He hit it good enough to go over the fence so it was a home run,'' said Moyer.

Appier, who will start for Oakland on opening day, gave up two runs on four hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Alex Rodriguez had an RBI triple and John Olerud doubled in Rodriguez off Appier in the third inning.

Olerud tied the score at 3 with a home run off Magnante in the eighth.

The Mariners won the game in the bottom of the 10th on a one-out homer by Brian Lesher against Doug Johns.

Notes: Edgar Martinez, the Mariners' veteran DH, said his badly bruised left elbow was coming along slower than expected. ``I still have inflammation,'' said Martinez, who was hit by a pitch by Arizona's Todd Stottlemyre on Sunday. ``I'm hoping I get up tomorrow and I feel good enough to hit.'' The Mariners hope Martinez can play in Saturday's exhibition against Milwaukee in Seattle. ... Seattle manager Lou Piniella said he'd prefer to have John Halama start the season in the bullpen so he could have a second left-hander there with Arthur Rhodes. He said it all depends on how right-handers Brett Tomko (inflammation in his right Achilles' tendon) and Gil Meche (tightness in his right shoulder) pitch on Friday. ``But I'm very comfortable with Johnny in the rotation,'' Piniella said. Halama won 11 games and made 24 starts for the Mariners last season. This spring, he's struggled with a 9.35 ERA and seven homers allowed in four starts.
