JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ Javier Vazquez allowed two runs in five innings and Peter Bergeron homered as the Montreal Expos beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-4 on Sunday to assure them of their best spring record in eight years.

Montreal manager Felipe Alou said he wanted to win spring training games so his players would enter the regular season with a winning mind-set. The Expos are doing just that, going 15-8 for their best spring since winning 20 games in 1992.

``We established early on that we can win some ball games,'' Alou said. ``That's something we couldn't even do in spring training the past few years.''

With a week remaining in the preseason, Alou, however, remains cautious about too much optimism from the spring wins.

``It's getting kind of long now, tiring now, we're ready to go home,'' Alou said. ``We are eager to go and play for keeps.''

Eight Expos drove in runs and Vazquez allowed six hits to pick up his third win against no defeats this spring. Vazquez has allowed five earned runs in 22 innings.

``Vazquez pitched well, he didn't have his real good, sharp stuff, but that change up gets him out of trouble a lot,'' Alou said. ``Three years ago he could have given up eight runs in five innings, but today he gave up two because he's a pitcher now.''

Vladimir Guerrero and Milton Bradley both doubled in runs, while Brian Schneider, Geoff Blum, Orlando Cabrera and Yohanny Valera had RBI singles. Wilton Guerrero added a sacrifice fly for Montreal.

Will Clark hit his first home run of the spring, a solo shot in the second for Baltimore, and Jeff Conine had a two-run home run in the eighth off Expos reliever Ugueth Urbina.

Sidney Ponson, the first Orioles pitcher to work six innings this spring, surrendered six runs on 11 hits, he hit a batter, walked one and had no strike outs.

He has allowed 18 earned runs in 23 innings this spring.
