  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ No matter who pitched for Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh hit the ball hard. And when the Pirates didn't, the Devil Rays helped them score.

Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run, second-inning homer and Adrian Brown, Pat Meares and Bruce Aven keyed a 20-hit attack with three each to help the Pirates to a 15-5 victory Wednesday.

Eleven of 13 players who went to the plate for Pittsburgh had at least one hit, while Meares, John Vander Wal and Emil Brown drove in two runs apiece. The Devil Rays also committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs.

``It was an ugly game,'' Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild said. ``Pitching, defense, everything.''

Rothschild used a lineup featuring only two regulars _ shortstop Kevin Stocker and catcher John Flaherty. But the lopsided score couldn't be blamed on youth and inexperience because most of the Devil Rays filling in have spent time in the majors.

Herbert Perry homered off Kris Benson and Jason Boyd for Tampa Bay, giving him a club-record six this spring. Jose Guillen, competing for a starting job in right field, also had a solo shot off Benson, who allowed two runs and six hits in five innings for the victory.

Ramirez homered during Pittsburgh's five-run second inning against loser Steve Trachsel, who settled down to retire nine of his last 10 batters. The Pirates also scored five times in the seventh, twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth to build their lead to 15-2.

Four of five Devil Rays pitchers used allowed at least two runs. The exception was young prospect Matt White, who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth despite being hit in the left calf by a line drive.

``He should be OK. He's probably going to be a little sore,'' Rothschild said. ``He was a bright spot today. He threw the ball well, I thought, which is good to see. You look for a silver lining. He was it today.''

Notes: The Devil Rays will retire uniform No. 12 in honor of Wade Boggs, the newest member of the 3,000-hit club. The .328 career hitter retired after reaching the milestone last season and took a job as special assistant to general manager Chuck LaMar ... Tampa Bay optioned outfielder Alex Sanchez to Triple-A Durham ... Pittsburgh's Warren Morris drove in a run with a second-inning sacrifice fly, but finished 0-for-4, stopping a four-game hitting streak. The only other Pirate without a hit was Randy Knorr, who was 0-for-1 but scored a run.
