DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) _ The New York Yankees are looking at Ed Yarnall as their No. 5 starter. What they saw Sunday was not pretty.

Yarnall was rocked in his spring training debut for 10 runs and eight hits in one inning of the Yankees' 14-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

``Tomorrow is a new day. I've got to build on what happened today,'' Yarnall said.

Yarnall looked like a pitcher who had missed his first two scheduled starts because of back stiffness. He allowed three home runs, including Raul Mondesi's grand slam. He also walked one and hit a batter.

``I'm disappointed of course. I think that's the worst I've ever done in my career,'' Yarnall said. ``My back felt good, everything felt fine. I had no control the whole inning.''

Yarnall appeared to be working out of trouble with two runners on and one out when he retired Carlos Delgado on pop fly. However, David Segui started a streak of eight straight reaching base with a three-run homer.

Jose Cruz hit a two-run shot, Shannon Stewart had a run-scoring single and Mondesi ended the barrage with his grand slam.

``He got his work in in half the time,'' joked Yankees manager Joe Torre on what was slated to be a two-inning stint for Yarnall. ``He was up with everything and was pushing the ball. I think he was a little jumpy.''

Yarnall retired Delgado _ the inning's 13th batter _ for the second time on his 52nd pitch as the Blue Jays' cleanup hitter flied out to left.

The 10 runs in an innings was a record for Toronto.

``When you're competing for a job, it's frustrating,'' said former Yankees pitcher and Toronto starter David Wells of Yarnall. ``These things happen. You just have to make the best of a situation. He's got to put it behind him, definitely.''

Wells worked a scoreless first inning for the Blue Jays, allowing two hits.

Before the game, Torre said ``right now we're looking at Yarnall,'' as the No. 5 starter.

``I don't think one outing will determine anybody's spot,'' Yarnall said. ``I just can't make a habit of this.''

``You have to dismiss that,'' Torre said. ``It's spring training and he hasn't been out there. We'll do everything we can to throw that one away.''

Should Yarnall fail to keep the spot, Ramiro Mendoza would likely get the nod.

``It's not Mendoza can't do this, he's just so valuable,'' Torre said of Mendoza's success in the bullpen.

Without naming him, Torre again expressed his opposition to trading the versatile Mendoza. The right-hander has been the subject of trade speculation involving Anaheim's Jim Edmonds.

``To me, pitching is our strength,'' Torre said. ``I'm of the mind you have to keep the other team from scoring. We've been to the playoffs four straight years ... pitching is responsible for it.''

Notes: Pitching against the Yankees is still special for Wells. ``That team brings the best out of you, even if it's exhibition or video games,'' Wells said. ... Yankees OF Tim Raines went 0 for 4 Sunday and could miss the next 5 to 6 days to undergo dental work. ... Suspended Yankees DH Darryl Strawberry, who is undergoing drug addiction treatment in West Palm Beach Fla., turned 38 on Sunday. Family friends say the early reports on Strawberry are encouraging.
