BOX SCORE
PHOENIX (AP) _ Kevin Appier combined with four relievers on a five-hitter as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Thursday for their third straight win. Appier threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two to win in his first official appearance of the spring. He pitched one inning on Sunday before rain wiped out the contest. ``The fastball was moving around a lot and the slider was breaking good,'' said Appier, who will be the A's opening day starter. ``I feel like I'm pretty far along already.'' Mike Magnante and Scott Service each threw two scoreless innings, and Terry Burrows and Will Brunson each added a scoreless inning for the A's. The A's scored two runs without the benefit of a hit against loser Jose Jimenez. Ryan Christian reached on an error and Eric Chavez walked. After Jason Giambi walked to load the bases, Matt Stairs hit an RBI grounder and Chavez scored on a wild pitch. Jimenez did not allow a hit or an earned run in three innings, but walked three. Jorge Velandia hit a sacrifice fly and Josue Espada singled to drive in runs in the sixth against Pete Walker. Cody McKay added a run-scoring single in the eighth. Colorado's Jason Hardtke tripled with two outs in the second, but Appier struck out Chris Latham to end the inning. The Rockies played without Larry Walker and Jeff Cirillo.
