KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) _ On the day that the Atlanta Braves learned that John Smoltz would be lost for the season, 18-game winner Kevin Millwood was pounded and the Toronto Blue Jays went on to an 11-7 victory Wednesday.

Toronto broke a 5-all tie with five runs in the eighth inning, keyed by two-run doubles from Anthony Sanders and Brent Abernathy. Casey Blake added an RBI single in the inning off Jimmy Osting.

Before the game, the Braves announced that Smoltz will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.

``Everybody's going to have to pick up their game a little bit and make up for the void we're going to have there,'' Millwood said. ``Somebody's going to have to step in and take his spot and pitch in the rotation.''

Millwood, who had been considered Atlanta's fourth starter behind Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux _ all NL Cy Young winners _ gave up four runs _ three earned _ and four hits in three innings.

``It went all right,'' Millwood said. ``If you look at it on paper, it wasn't very good, but I think I got a couple of things done today that I needed to get done and it's not as bad as it looked.

``I was trying to get my breaking balls a little bit closer to where they should be and I think I did that. I threw a couple of good curveballs, a couple of good sliders and that's what I wanted to do today.''

Toronto's leadoff hitters in the first and second innings reached base and were aggressive on the basepaths. While Millwood allowed only one stolen base, he had to throw to first often.

``Everybody wants to get on the bases,'' he said. ``I got a leadoff guy on every inning, which isn't what you want to do, but I did a lot of what I wanted to do today, so I'm not totally bummed out about what went on.''

David Segui was 3-for-4 for Toronto and drove in two runs, and Andy Thompson hit a solo homer in the ninth.

Brian Hunter had a two-run homer for the Braves and Andruw Jones and Junior Brignac each went 2-for-2.
