LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ New team, new uniform, new spring camp.

Yet, the same Juan Gonzalez. All he does is hit.

Gonzalez, in his first game against major leaguers, had a single in three at-bats Sunday during the Detroit Tigers' 9-5 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Gonzalez, acquired in a nine-player trade with the Texas Rangers, came up with a tight left hamstring following an exhibition game Wednesday night against Florida Southern. It wasn't anything serious, but new manager Phil Garner held him out of the Tigers' first two games of the regular exhibition season anyway.

``Everything felt normal,'' Gonzalez said. ``I had my first at-bat in a different uniform. Everything else was the same.''

Gonzalez, who is pondering the Tigers' $140 million contract offer, singled to center in the fifth inning on a 1-2 count during his third at-bat, off Jason Rakers, a right-hander who spent most of last season with the Buffalo Bisons, the Cleveland Indians' farm club in the Triple-A International League.

Garner promptly lifted him for a pinch runner.

``I'm real happy here,'' said Gonzalez, a two-time AL Most Valuable Player who hit .336 with 39 homers and 128 RBIs last season for the Rangers. ``I feel comfortable. I see everybody smile here. Everybody is relaxed.

``Everybody plays better that way.''

Garner said Gonzalez would stay back in camp when the Tigers travel to Clearwater on Monday and to Vero Beach on Wednesday. But, if the hamstring feels comfortable, Gonzalez may start in right field Tuesday when the Tigers host the Atlanta Braves.

``I'm anxious to play in the outfield,'' Gonzalez said.

On almost any other day, Gonzalez would have been a footnote at most.

Damion Easley hit a two-run homer, Gregg Zaun had a solo shot and Luis Polonia hit a triple and single and drove in two runs to pace in the Tigers' 12-hit attack.

Johnny Damon had two hits in four at-bats and Carlos Beltran drove in two runs for the Royals.

Winner Dave Borkowski gave up three runs and six hits in 2 2-3 innings. Loser Jeff Suppan gave up four runs and four hits in two innings with two walks.
