ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Juan Guzman didn't need Tampa Bay's big bats in his first start for the Devil Rays.

Guzman allowed one run, two hits and two walks in two innings Saturday as Tampa Bay beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 without power hitters Jose Canseco, Greg Vaughn, Fred McGriff and Vinny Castilla in the lineup.

``That's all right. Save them for the season,'' Guzman said. ``I can't wait to see them. It's going to be fun.''

Atlanta starter Greg Maddux pitched two shutout innings, allowing a single and a walk. He had one strikeout.

Guzman struck out Andruw Jones to end a scoreless first inning. In the second, he walked Javy Lopez and set up the first Atlanta run when his throw to second base got past shortstop Bobby Smith.

Lopez scored when Randall Simon grounded into a double play.

``I felt great. I worked on everything,'' said Guzman, who also has pitched for Toronto, Baltimore and Cincinnati since 1998. ``During the season you have all your pitches ready. Today I just wanted to get my work in.''

In the absence of big-name sluggers, Herbert Perry hit a two-run home run and Steve Cox added a solo shot for the Devil Rays.

Notes: In his first big-league camp, Tampa Bay LHP Jim Morris pitched one perfect inning. Last season, the former high school science teacher drew national attention by becoming the oldest major league rookie in three decades at age 35. ... Atlanta will host a Tampa Bay split squad Sunday at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. RHP John Smoltz is expected to start for the Braves against RHP Dan Wheeler. ... LHP Wilson Alvarez is scheduled to start for the rest of the Devil Rays against a visiting Cincinnati split squad. RHP Rob Bell is the projected Reds starter.
