DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A minor league baseball team thought better of holding a promotion poking fun at Larry Eustachy after realizing the Iowa State basketball coach acknowledged being an alcoholic. The Quad City River Bandits on Friday called off "Larry Eustachy's Iowa State Night at the Ballpark," which was to include cheap beer and a kissing booth. Eustachy's job is in jeopardy after newspapers reported that Eustachy had partied with students at Missouri and Kansas State following losses this season. Photos from the party in Columbia, Mo., show the 47-year-old coach holding a can of beer while kissing and being kissed on the cheek by young women. On Wednesday, Eustachy said he is an alcoholic and had sought treatment. The university suspended him with pay, and his athletic director recommended he be fired; Eustachy said he would not resign. The River Bandits, a Class A team in the Midwest League, had several gags ready for the promotion, scheduled for next Wednesday night: Besides the kissing booth, the same brand of beer Eustachy was drinking in the photos would be sold for $1. "We made a mistake," team president Kevin W. Krause said Friday. "We meant to regard this event as tongue-in-cheek, but really did not think it through thoroughly." Krause said that as a token of the team's apology to Eustachy, Iowa State and the team's own fans, anyone wanting to attend Wednesday night's game will be admitted free. |
