Book on DT Willie Howard

Here's a rundown of what I've had to say about Stanford DT WILLIE HOWARD since the beginning of the college-football season.

Feb. 28
With his versatility and 6-foot-3¼, 296-pound frame, Howard presents a great deal of value during the latter stages of round one. In order to land in that general area, he'll need a strong performance during individual testing. That workout is scheduled for March 6 at Stanford.

Feb. 7
Determined 293-pounder with the quickness and overall ability to play DE at the pro level. Howard can run, plus you won't find anyone who will out-hustle him on game day.

Jan.12
Didn't have a lot of help dealing with constant double teams this year but he fought through that to be very effective, especially in big games. He had his best game against Washington. A potential defensive end in the NFL who would benefit from freedom on the outside.

Jan. 4
Lacks eye-catching sack totals, but if you study the film, you'll notice Howard getting an awful lot of attention from the opposition in terms of blocking schemes. A key with Howard is the fact that he could become a factor at DE once in the NFL. He's also a dedicated athlete with the willingness to pay attention to detail.

Dec. 31
The hard-working, physically talented 6-foot-3, 291-pounder didn't always dominate in the Pac-10 this past season, but he still managed to put together a very solid campaign. With his natural explosion to the QB once he separates, there will be an opportunity for Howard to become a factor at a DE spot in the right defensive structure. What I really like about Howard is the hustle and desire he shows on every snap, along with his willingness in the off-season to do whatever it takes to improve his game.

Dec. 7
Steady, reliable DT with the athletic/physical skills to operate at any position up front depending on the scheme. Howard also has a superior work ethic. However, he wasn't a sack artist or true dominator on a week-to-week basis.

Nov. 22
Operated at nose a great deal against Cal last week, coming away with an interception as well as a fumble recovery. For the year, Howard finished with 50 tackles, nine stops behind the line of scrimmage, five sacks and two pass deflections. His hard-working approach and the level of consistency he maintained was particularly impressive.

Nov. 15
Has enjoyed a solid final campaign with the Cardinal. This past week against Arizona State, Howard came through with a productive effort, finishing with eight tackles, three stops behind the line of scrimmage, and one sack.

Nov. 8 Howard is double-teamed on every snap. This past week against UCLA, he finished with four tackles while being shut out in the sack and tackle-for-loss categories.

Nov. 1
Gave one of his top efforts of the season last week against Washington. Howard wreaked havoc in the rain at Palo Alto, really getting after Marques Tuiasosopo. Howard finished with seven tackles, one sack, and also a pass deflection.

Oct. 26
Has been the primary defender the opposition has to account for when facing the Cardinal. In fact, Howard has been double- and sometimes triple-teamed right about 75 percent of the time. For the year, the hustling, relentless Howard has totaled 30 stops, five tackles for loss, three sacks and has blocked two PATs.
