LSU coach Saban shows serious recruiting skill
After turning around the fortunes at LSU in his first season as the head coach of the Bayou Bengals, Nick Saban proved he's equally skilled as a recruiter. Even though Michael Clayton played QB as a senior at the prep level, he's potentially destined for greatness as a big-play wide receiver. Saban also landed a big-time DE prospect in 6-foot-5, 273-pounder Marcus Spears. Up front along the offensive line, Ben Wilkerson could eventually become the best center LSU has produced since Kevin Mawae. Coming away with the top recruiting class in the SEC and one of the best in the country has to have LSU fans doing cartwheels.

Georgia coach Richt excited about QB, WR recruits
On Saturday, Andy Pollin and I spoke with new Georgia head coach Mark Richt on our "GameDay" show on ESPN Radio. Richt spoke in glowing terms about his top two offensive recruits, QB D.J. Shockley and WR Fred Gibson. Shockley combines mobility with a strong arm, while Gibson brings impressive size (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) and a ton of ability to the Bulldogs' wide receiving corps.

Tennessee lands dynamic running-back recruits
At Tennessee, Phillip Fulmer landed a pair of dynamic running-back prospects in Jabari Davis and Cedric Houston. In recent years it has been Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry and Travis Stephens all combining to form a talented and deep backfield for the Vols. Now it's Davis and Houston's turn to give defenses in the SEC fits.

Alabama set to welcome new QB
Alabama fans have to be excited about the addition of talented signal caller Brodie Croyle. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder missed the majority of his senior year with a knee injury, but reportedly has the necessary skill level to compete for the starting job early on with the Crimson Tide. Remember, the Crimson Tide QBs last year, Andrew Zow and Tyler Watts, really struggled when it came to moving the Alabama offense on a consistent basis.

Oregon State's top recruit could be gem of a QB
On ESPN Radio Sunday, Andy Pollin and I spoke with the gem of the Oregon State recruiting class, QB Derek Anderson. The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder was considered the top signal caller on the West Coast. Could Anderson become the next Drew Bledsoe in the Pac-10? Beaver fans will have to wait a year for Anderson to seize control of the Oregon State offense. Keep in mind, Dennis Erickson will have the resourceful and effective Jonathan Smith back for his senior campaign this year.

Virginia Tech adds firepower on ground
At Virginia Tech, sophomore RB Lee Suggs proved to be a TD-maker in the Big East this past season. Now, the Hokies have yet another big-time back to add to the equation in Kevin Jones, a gifted 6-foot-1, 220-pounder who reminds recruiting expert Tom Lemming of Herschel Walker, only with a little more shiftiness and change-of-direction ability.
