Fiesta Bowl: Point of Attack
ESPN The Magazine

Even knuckleheads with Tostitos-size brains know that the biggest game of the season -- defending champ Miami vs. preseason long shot Ohio State -- will be decided by what happens after the handoffs, right?

  • Fiesta fever:
    It's all about matchups
  • Game Breaker:
    Andre Johnson, quiet killer
  • Game Taker:
    Coaches beware, it's Chris Gamble
  • Hard Cover:
    Breaking down Johnson vs. Gamble
  • The Hurricanes have sophomore Heisman finalist Willis McGahee. The Buckeyes have true freshman Maurice Clarett, who carries so much on his aching shoulders that his teammates were ordered not to tackle him during Fiesta Bowl practices.

But here's where you can stick that grind-it-out-theory right into a bowl of salsa dip. Big games are won on big plays. And nobody has more "Whoa, Nellie!" potential than Miami's back-breaking WR Andre Johnson and Ohio State's risk-taking cornerback who will line up across from him, the perfectly named Chris Gamble.

Welcome to the Fast-Twitch Muscle Convention: Johnson, star of last year's title game, vs. Gamble, wide receiver by training, cornerback by necessity. With the season on the line, the game in the balance, one play can decide it all. Keep your eyes downfield.

This article appears in the January 6 issue of ESPN The Magazine.
