The Life

August 8, 2002
Short and Sweet
ESPN The Magazine

These four MAG.com users earned a private chat with Stuart Scott. E-mail twoway@espn.com and tell us why we should give you some keyboard time.

Kermit: I'm worried about major league baseball. If you were commish, what would you do to save the game?

Stuart Scott: Kermit, I won't make any of the obvious jokes about your name -- but I am thinking of them. [Ed.'s note: and laughing.] I'd beg and plead with the owners and players association, "Don't be so greedy!" And I'd dress a lot better than Selig.

Shaquille O'Neal
Can't argue with Shaq's collection of hardware.
Tim Dawg: Why are black sports figures often talked about in a negative way by the press?

Scott: Do you think racism all of a sudden disappeared? I don't think Serena and Venus would be criticized nearly as much if they were white. And if there was a white player with Shaq's skills, I don't think sportscasters would say things like, "He's just a physical specimen who uses brute force." At least not as often.

Skinny_T: At Rucker Park in NYC, where players have been given nicknames like "Skip to My Lou" and "The Best Kept Secret," what would yours be?

Scott: MJ calls me S-squared. Let's go with that. Or Double S: Short and Sweet.

Skinny_T: On an all-star squad of SportsCenter ballers, who'd make the starting five?

Scott: I'm a football man myself, but ... Scott Van Pelt in the pivot -- he rolls 6'6'' and has game. I'll put Kenny Mayne at power forward because he throws wicked elbows and he's a scrapper. I'll play 3 -- not because I've got game. I can run and jump, and I look good, but the ball doesn't go in. Dan Patrick at the 2. He's getting up there in age (wink, wink), but he can shoot the rock. And at point guard ... certainly not Rich Eisen. I'll take David Lloyd. Sixth man? The man we got from Fox, Kevin Frazier. Call it a blockbuster trade.

Skinny_T: And if you could have one wish granted in the sports world, what would it be?

Scott: That fans would stop booing, period. What are you all booing about? A guy makes an error, drops a pass -- he's not trying? Like you could do better? Stop booing.

Los Angeles: Got any yacht racing tips for Dennis Conner?

Scott: Check for leaks before you shove off.
