SHAQUILLE O'NEAL
Shaquille O'Neal

TROPHS ON THE MANTEL: Best NBA Player (2001); Outstanding Performance by a Sports Personality in an Attempt to Break Into Show Business (1993). Really. (Shaq raps with Fu Schnickens on Arsenio.)
AMAZING FEATS: Three-time Finals MVP totally destroyed everyone in his path this year and even cuddled up to Kobe on the road to the Finals.
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "Hey, I'd love to talk to you about the award and how much it means to me, but I have a parade to go to."
NOMINATED FOR: Best Male Athlete; Best NBA Player. "Tell me, did I win?" No peeking, Aristotle.

TONY HAWK
Tony Hawk

PRECIOUS METAL: Outstanding Action Sports Athlete (2000)
AMAZING FEATS: Pulled off the first 900 in skateboarding history, floating 2 1/2 rotations above the halfpipe at the X Games "Best Trick" competition.
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "On ESPY night, we were sitting behind Tiger Woods' mom, who was wearing a very festive dress. She's cool. And I remember brushing by MJ in the aisle, which was pretty huge. Jordan had on this crazy silver suit."
THIS YEAR'S TOP DOG: "Lance Armstrong all day. I'm always rooting for him. His story never gets old."

CAL RIPKEN
Cal Ripken

BRAGGING RIGHTS: Male Athlete of the Year, Showstopper of the Year (1996)
AMAZING TRICKS: Set Iron Man record and captured the hearts of baseball fans by playing in 2,131 consecutive games. Even made a few couch potatoes get up on their feet.
CAREER HIGH: "That's easy: catching the final out of the 1983 World Series. It was the perfect ending all baseball players dream of -- a World Series championship."
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "I didn't really write a speech, just spoke from the heart. But don't ask me for fashion advice. My wife had to dress me for the show."
AND THE ESPY GOES TO: "I like the U.S. Olympic Women's Hockey Team. I got to meet them at the Opening Ceremonies. Nice girls. Tiger Woods and Barry are great too."

EVANDER HOLYFIELD

HARDWARE IN THE TROPHY CASE: Boxer of the Year (1998); Decade Award, Comeback Athlete, Boxer of the Year, Dramatic Individual Performance (1997); Boxer of the Year (1994)
AMAZING TRICKS: Snatched the heavyweight championship belt from Tyson and stole what was left of the man's sanity.
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "When I won for comeback of the year, I didn't want a speechwriter. I told everybody how much it meant to be honored for coming back from adversity. I didn't forget to thank the man upstairs and the folks at ESPN for giving me the award."
MUCH RESPECT TO: "Shaquille O'Neal for Best Male Athlete, and Venus and Serena. Those sisters deserve the top female award. They've given tennis a good name."

SAMMY SOSA
Sammy Sosa

IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN: Humanitarian Award (1999)
SHOWING BIG HEART: Started a whole new ESPY category in 1999 when he was honored for his work helping victims of Hurricane Georges in his native Dominican Republic.
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "Things you must remember in your speech: 'Thank you, I love America and baseball has been very, very good to me.' And always thank your mother."
AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME: "Easy. Tiger and Serena."

MARION JONES
Marion Jones

RUNNING AWAY WITH THE GOODS: Female U.S. Olympic Athlete of the Year, Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year (2001); Outstanding Women's Track Performer of the Year ('98-01). Her six ESPYs overall are the most won by any female athlete.
AMAZING FEATS: Five medals -- three gold -- in Sydney. Survived the glare of her husband's Olympic drug probe, followed by divorce. Now she'll make a run at Flo-Jo's 14-year-old records in the 100m (10.49) and 200m (21.34).
ESPY AFTERGLOW: "The ceremony just blows my mind. When I look around and see athletes like Tiger Woods sitting to my right, Ray Lewis sitting behind me, Derek Jeter sitting to my left -- one year I sat next to Arnold Palmer -- and then I win an award, I'm like, 'Wow!'"
DUSTING THE COMPETITION: "I'd like to see Venus and Tiger take home the top awards."
