The Life

On the rebound
ESPN The Magazine

Louisville QB and Heisman candidate Dave Ragone will be keeping a diary in ESPN The Magazine and on ESPN.com throughout the season. Here is the third installment.

It's hard to sleep right now. My body is still aching from Sunday's game (a 22-17 loss to Kentucky). And it'll probably still be hurting till Thursday. I've just been icing it a lot and basically living in the training room.

Ragone was attacked by the Cats last weekend.

They really came after us, and we did expect that. We knew they visited TCU (the Horned Frogs had blitzed me like crazy and I got sacked 10 times last year). And Kentucky copied their scheme to a T. I think they blitzed eight times in the first 12 plays. It was a little overwhelming, but we're gonna have to deal with it. We have a young, inexperienced line and it was trial by fire.

Somebody told me I got knocked down 24 times. It sure does feel like that. That was the toughest game I've ever played in. I even lost 11 pounds during the game (down to 243), but within two days I had pretty much put all the weight back on.

On Monday we watched the game film. We don't see it as a team, but rather in position groups. I kept thinking, 'I wish I could've done this different or done that different.' There was one throw down the middle that got intercepted, and as soon as I saw it, I just knew it was bad because I didn't transfer my weight right. I didn't step and throw. I just kind of flicked it out there.

As you get to know me, you'll figure out that I am my own toughest critic and it's hard knowing we did have some opportunities in the second half that we just didn't take advantage of. And that's what really hurts more than any of the physical pounding.

I wish the outcome was different because that game meant so much to the program. People have asked me if I regret all the hype around me or having my own bobblehead, but it's not like Kentucky would've come after me any less.

The good thing is, it's just our first game and we still have 11 left to play. This game made us look in the mirror. Obviously teams that play us are gonna try and mimic what Kentucky did, so we gotta prove we can deal with it. This week our O-line will get configured a little differently and some guys will be moved around. The key is, we have to get back up.

The biggest thing I can do starts at practice Tuesday afternoon and that's by bouncing around and having fun. If anything I'll probably be over-energetic. The young guys are gonna look up at me so I have to show them that Saturday is a new game.
