Louisville QB and Heisman candidate Dave Ragone will be keeping a diary in ESPN The Magazine and on ESPN.com throughout the season. Here is the second installment.
Two-a-days are still going, but we're getting close to the end. Right now, our legs are gone. We hit the physical wall a few days ago and this is about the point where a lot of guys are hitting that mental wall. Fighting through it is the key. These are the days you really find out something about your team. Everyone has to fight through the pain. All of this hard work will pay off in the end because it makes us tougher, both mentally and physically, and will allow us to call on that little extra in that tight game late in the fourth quarter.
Dontay Spillman, our JC transfer, who is a local guy that everyone around here knows, has been impressive. He's a guy who's about 5'11", maybe 6' and maybe 190 pounds, but he'll really go and get the ball and I love that. He's the kind of guy you're not afraid to be a little off on your throw with because you know he'll be aggressive with it. Two other wideouts who look like they're going to make an impact are J.R. Russell, who is a big 6'4" guy and Tiger Jones who is a smooth 5'11" guy.
One of the really cool things during camp has been seeing how well Deion is doing with the Patriots. We're all really excited. He had an eight-catch game the other day and people are saying he's one of the biggest rookie surprises. But none of us here are surprised. I've always said Deion's the best receiver I've ever seen. He physically might not be the tallest guy or run the right 40 time, but he is just so quick and runs such good routes, we knew he was going to be a good player.
For me, camp is going well I think. I've actually kept a pretty good focus. And it hasn't been easy since Coach (John) Pettas, our new offensive coordinator has been putting in a lot of new plays. He's actually my third offensive coordinator since I've been here.
We've added a lot of new wrinkles to the arsenal. There's been a lot of new formations and probably 20 to 25 new plays. It'll be similar stuff to what he did with Jake Plummer when they were at Arizona State. Coach really knows how to scheme to utilize matchups and create mismatches.
I'm going to have a lot more control over the pass protections and a little more control on the field. I'll also be able to throw more downfield, which is good.
Before I always used to get asked the question, 'How come you guys don't throw the ball downfield more often?' And the answer is because our old system, which was kinda West Coast, was more about just making the right reads. This is almost like what I played in back in high school, where it's just our best guy against your guy and let's see who wins. I'm really excited about that.
