Backtalk: ESPN 100
ESPN The Magazine

You've seen The ESPN 100 -- our take on the most important people, places, events, achievements, teams and trends of the past 12 months. Here's some fan feedback:

I was extremely disappointed to not see the passing of Jack Buck on your top 100 list. Certainly a Hall of Fame broadcaster deserved a mention, particularly when you felt the need to include bobblehead dolls.
Susan Boland, St. Louis

Obviously none of you have ever wrestled before, because then you would see the magnitude of what Cael Sanderson accomplished over the last four years! I can't believe you ranked the UConn women's basketball team so high for going undefeated for one season, when this man has gone undefeated for four years.
Ron James, Newton, Kan.

You missed two big basketball moments. The Lakers were the champs, but didn't provide the best game. Game 5 between the Nets and the Pacers was one of the greatest playoff games ever and should have made the list. Also the Lakers-Kings game when the referees decided who should win and stole one from Sacramento should be on there.
Andrew Dickerson, Indianapolis

You missed the fact that Bonds breaking the recently broken home run record was about as exciting as the guy who broke four minutes in the mile after Roger Bannister. Breaking three-year-old records is not interesting.
Matt McCoyd, Chicago

The small Sept. 11 feature and John Franco's words said it all. Sports has always been a speck of dust compared to what takes place in the real world and this was never more evident than in 2001. ESPN should have decided to drop the list because nothing else mattered in 2001. The year will be an asterisk in sporting history.
Doug Olenick, New York City

You forgot Peter Forsberg's playoff-leading point total after missing the entire regular season. (The man led the playoffs in points without even playing in the finals.)
Michael Uzmann, Columbus, Oh.

Maryland hoops #28, MJ #29? MJ is the greatest living legend in sports. He made headlines for months in anticipation of his return. He's the only guy that makes SportsCenter when he airballs. And in the year post-9/11, Juan Dixon and company showed the American spirit by overcoming adversity with heroics and heart.
Michael Bonnaure, Washington D.C.

Seattle's 116 wins. It isn't enough to throw in this most significant season as the last sentence under Ichiro's selection. The M's deserve better than that.
Susan Arb, Yakima, Wash.

Your ranking of the U.S. World Cup team should come before the Lakers' three-peat. Team USA defied the odds in going as far as they did -- the Lakers were favorites all year, and there was no surprise. You placed the Stanley cup winners at #17. That's fine -- the Red Wings were favorites too. The Lakers should have been right next to them.
Rob Krueger, Toronto, Ont.

What about Adam Taliaferro leading the Penn State football team onto the field at Beaver Stadium for the season opener? Definitely a better story than Shaq's big toe.
Tanya Paoli, Philadelphia

How could you guys forget Ricky Carmichael in supercross/motocross? The guy is setting records every time he gets on a track.
David Cochrane, Boynton Beach, Fl.
