Blitz backtalk: Feldman on the hot seat
ESPN The Magazine

Nothing gets fans to their terminals faster than coaching rumors. The Mag's Bruce Feldman fanned the flames, and now he has to handle the hose.

You do know that Oklahoma State will be looking for a new head coach as well? Why didn't you add them in your list of coaching changes?

Thank you,
Ryan Austin

Ryan,

You may not believe this, but it was in there. And in my genius move to alphabetize the list, I think I cut and paste over OSU. I have a buddy who coached there last year, but left after Ryan moved on to the Patriots and he's gonna give me grief for slighting his ‘boys. I think they are gonna go after former OSU OC Les Miles now in the NFL. Obviously, Mike Stoops will be discussed, as would Gundy (probably too young), Gary Nord and Gary Darnell. I'd think it’ll be Miles.

Mr. Feldman,

Enjoyed your article regarding the coaching vacancies and candidates. Good leads! I’m a Rutgers fan and thought Schiano sounded like a good possibility.  You probably know our shtick -- need an NJ guy with a national profile. A recruiter and a motivator. Have you heard the name Frank Verducci? Really like his NJ recruiting ability and open interest in the job. Thought your mention of KC Keeler was interesting. We need a stud big time. Noticed you didn’t mention Gary Pinkel for any opening. Intentional? Perhaps you believe he’s holding out for a Big Ten job? Why don’t we hear Gerry DiNardo’s name?

Hey Chuck,

I have heard of Verducci and was told that he’s really respected around the state. I think he probably belongs on that list more than Darnell (and Pinkel), who aren’t really NJ guys. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about Keeler; he’s done great things there. DiNardo, from what I heard, is involved in the XFL. I think -- and I mean this as a compliment -- he belongs back in the college game (just not in the deep south). I spent a little time with him last summer while I was working on a Josh Booty story and I thought Coach was just a very decent man caught in a no-win situation. His NY ties would help him in the Big East. Having coached at Vandy, I also figured he could do great at BC (not that OB is going anywhere anytime soon). Thanks for the note -- sounds like you really know your stuff.

Aside from Hunley, why aren't there any other good black coaching candidates getting hyped?

Rod,

I think NM State's Tony Samuel is a guy people may try to talk to. And of all the NFL guys, Buffalo's Ted Cottrell could be in at Rutgers and seems like the most viable option. Sly Croom up in Detroit and Vikes QB coach Alex Woods are guys who also might get back into the college game.

SHERRILL DENIES INTEREST IN BAMA

Thanks Lee. I did say Best GUESS. Although I think you'll see a lot of denials at this time of year because anything else might make kids think they're quitting on them.
