LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Smarty Jones and The Cliff's Edge were among a full field of 20 horses entered Wednesday for the Kentucky Derby.

A total of 22 horses were entered, but with the Derby field limited to 20 based on graded stakes earnings, Eddington and Rock Hard Ten were left out of Saturday's race.

"We were realistic. This wasn't a momentous occasion today,'' Eddington trainer Mark Hennig said from Belmont Park, where the colt will now be pointed to the Preakness on May 15. Rock Hard Ten was scratched from last Saturday's Derby Trial, hoping a spot would open in the Derby. Now, it's on to the Preakness for trainer Jason Orman.

"It was a gamble and it didn't pay off,'' Orman said. "It's disappointing, but there's nothing we can do about it now.''

Official odds and post positions were to be determined later Wednesday. The field, in order of post-position selection, is: Minister Eric, Master David, Friends Lake, Imperialism, St Averil, Action This Day, Wimbledon, The Cliff's Edge, Pollard's Vision, Borrego, Smarty Jones, Read the Footnotes, Birdstone, Lion Heart, Castledale, Tapit, Pro Prado, Song of the Sword, Limehouse and Quintons Gold Rush.

Since the 20-horse rule began in 1984, the race has yet to reach the maximum. There have been 19 starters five times under the rule, most recently in 2000.
