INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Momentum, who finished second in three top handicap races in the summer of 2002, returns after a layoff of nearly 19 months in Monday's $350,000 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park.

Wednesday, owner Paul Reddam supplemented Momentum, 6, to the Grade 1 Shoemaker at a cost of $7,000. The Shoemaker will be Momentum's first start since he finished second to Pleasantly Perfect in the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita in October 2002.

Shortly after the 2002 Goodwood, Momentum was sidelined by a tendon injury to his right foreleg, preventing a start in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Arlington Park. Last spring, while preparing for a comeback, he suffered another injury to the same tendon.

"He tore the tendon a little lower," trainer Craig Dollase said. "It wasn't as bad."

After undergoing treatment to regenerate growth in the tendon, and being given another rest, Momentum returned to Dollase's stable earlier this year.

"He's trained so well," Dollase said. "With a tendon setback, you question whether they will hold up. He's come through with flying colors so far. He's had three three-quarter mile works so far."

The Shoemaker will be Momentum's first start on turf since his American debut, a runner-up finish in the 2001 Bien Bien Stakes over this course. In England in 2001, Momentum won the Strensall Stakes at York over a mile on turf.

Momentum was nominated for Monday's $75,000 Ack Ack Handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs on dirt, but the more difficult Shoemaker was chosen because of its prestige.

"We're playing catch-up," Dollase said. "We didn't get the prep race."

The plan to supplement was clinched after Momentum worked six furlongs in 1:14 last Sunday.

"He's proven on the grass, and he had a good work the other day," Dollase said.

In 2002, Momentum was winless in seven starts, but was second in three major stakes - losing by a nose to Sky Jack in the Hollywood Gold Cup, by three-quarters of a length to Came Home in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and by 3 1/4 lengths to Pleasantly Perfect in the Goodwood.

Pleasantly Perfect has since developed into the nation's top handicap horse, with wins in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Classic and the Dubai World Cup in March.

Even though Momentum was well beaten by Pleasantly Perfect, Dollase is hoping that the form will hold up for Momentum this year.

"It's encouraging to see Pleasantly Perfect go on and do as well as he's done," Dollase said.

Field of nine probable for Shoemaker
Aside from Momentum, there are eight other probable starters for the Shoemaker - Dell Place, Designed for Luck, Glick, King of Happiness, Leroidesanimaux, Singletary, Sweet Return, and Tsigane.

Dell Place, Glick, and Leroidesanimaux were supplemental nominations.

Dell Place, trained by Mike Mitchell, won an optional claimer at a mile on turf on April 21. Glick won the San Simeon Handicap over about 6 1/2 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita on April 18.

Trained by Jeff Mullins, Glick was considered for a race at Royal Ascot next month, but will not make that trip.

Leroidesanimaux won the Inglewood Handicap on May 1.

Quero Quero will start in Gamely
Monday's card has three stakes, including the 1 1/8-mile Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap for fillies and mares.

Quero Quero, the winner of the 2003 Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap and the runner-up in the Wilshire Handicap on April 25, will start in the Gamely, trainer Paulo Lobo said. Lobo had left the decision until Wednesday, wanting to see how Quero Quero, 4, trained in the early part of the week.

The Gamely will have a small field, including Dimitrova, Megahertz, and Noches de Rosa.

Trainer Bobby Frankel did not supplement Intercontinental, Hollywood Park officials said. His stable will be represented by Megahertz.

Smile n Wildcat deserves respect in Ack Ack
When Smile n Wildcat won an allowance race on the undercard of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1, one of trainer Doug O'Neill's relatives confused the race with the big one.

"Was that the Derby you won?" O'Neill recalls being asked by telephone shortly after the six-furlong race.

After explaining that the allowance race was only a minor event, the issue was straightened out. "At least he won on a good day," O'Neill said of Smile n Wildcat.

Monday, Smile n Wildcat will make his second stakes appearance of the year in the $75,000 Ack Ack Handicap. Judging from his recent form, Smile n Wildcat deserves consideration.

Following a third in the San Carlos Handicap over a mile at Golden Gate Fields in late February, Smile n Wildcat has won his last two starts, a streak that began with a victory in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race on March 20.

In the Ack Ack Handicap, Smile n Wildcat must beat Buddy Gil, the 2003 Santa Anita Derby winner, who ended a four-race losing streak with a half-length victory in an allowance race at Santa Anita on April 16.

Other probable starters are Black Bart, Buckland Manor, Cappuchino, Grey Memo, Hasty Kris, and Spensive. Grey Memo is making his first start since finishing eighth in the Sensational Star Handicap at Santa Anita in February. He was briefly retired after a series of disappointing performances, but resumed training in late March.

Desormeaux won't go to Japan with 'Fashion'
Kent Desormeaux will not ride Santa Anita Handicap runner-up Island Fashion in the $1.6 million Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo Racecourse on June 6, according to his agent, Brad Pegram.

Desormeaux was aboard Island Fashion for wins in the La Brea Stakes last December and the Santa Monica Handicap in January, as well as her second to Southern Image in the Big Cap.

Instead of traveling to Japan, Desormeaux will remain at Hollywood Park, where he is booked to ride Ticker Tape in the Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap on June 5, Pegram said.

Trainer Marcelo Polanco said he has not finalized a replacement rider for Island Fashion, who races for Jeff Nielsen's Everest Stable.

Castledale has first work since Derby
Castledale, who won the Santa Anita Derby in April but finished 14th in the Kentucky Derby, breezed three furlongs in 36.20 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday. The workout was his first since the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Jeff Mullins said Castledale has no specific goal in the coming weeks and could start on turf or dirt.
