INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Yearly Report confirmed her status as a top 3-year-old filly in California with an impressive win in Saturday's $200,000 Melair Stakes for California-breds at Hollywood Park.
Yearly Report was making her first start since winning the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Breeders' Cup Stakes at Santa Anita in January. She was sidelined during late winter and early spring because of illness. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Yearly Report ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.70, setting a stakes record. Owned by Golden Eagle Farm and trained by Bob Baffert, Yearly Report ($2.20) finished four lengths in front of stablemate Western Hemisphere. Yearly Report has won 3 of 4 starts and $258,400. "It seemed like every time a race would come up, she had a cold," said Betty Mabee, who owns Golden Eagle Farm. "But she's back, big-time." Yearly Report stalked pacesetter Iza Legend to the end of the backstretch before taking the lead along the rail. She was not threatened late. Western Hemisphere closed from fifth to finish second, 5 1/2 lengths clear of Nicole and Ben. The entry was the subject of massive show bets. Of the $1,002,920 bet to show, $972,590 was placed on the entry. There was a minus show pool of $180,008.
B. Thoughtful: It's Royally Chosen Royally Chosen ($11.40) was supplemented to the B. Thoughtful stakes for $3,000. Breaking from the rail, she stalked pacesetter Grant Marty a Wish, then took the lead in midstretch. Tucked Away finished third. Royally Chosen is trained by Bruce Headley and races for a partnership. The B. Thoughtful was her first stakes win since the California Cup Matron last November.
Fran's Valentine: 'Moscow' scores Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Moscow Burning ($7.60) rallied from sixth in the field of seven. She was timed in a quick 1:39.34. Moscow Burning finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of Super High, who led briefly in midstretch. Sweet Frippery finished third. Valentine Dancer, the 7-5 favorite, was never a factor and finished sixth. She was well-placed on the final turn, but failed to rally. Moscow Burning, 4, races for a partnership and is trained by Jim Cassidy. Claimed for $25,000 last August at Del Mar, Moscow Burning won the California Cup Distance Handicap at Santa Anita last November. * In the $60,000 Magali Farms Stakes for maiden fillies and mares, Alphabet Kisses ($6.80) scored a convincing win under Mick Ruis. She ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.26. | |
