Swept Overboard surprise winner of Met Mile

NEW YORK -- Swept Overboard is a miler indeed. He charged past the leaders around the far turn and pulled off a surprise win in the $750,000 Met Mile at Belmont Park on Monday.

In his first race at 1 mile, and running against the best performers at that distance, Swept Overboard beat Aldebaran by 4 3/4 lengths, with Crafty C.T. third, another 1 1/2 lengths back.

Swept Overboard, sent off at odds of 11-1 by a crowd of 20,548, moved into contention entering the turn. Then, jockey Jorge Chavez found room on the rail and the 5-year-old gray surged in front of Affirmed Success and favored Left Bank.

He was never challenged in the stretch as Aldebaran finished strong for second. The winning time of 1:33.34 was the fourth fastest in 109 runnings of the Met Mile. The record is 1:32 4/5 by Honour and Glory in 1996.

``I was told to stay four or five lengths behind, then make one move,'' said Chavez, who was riding the horse for the first time. ``I didn't want to fight him. He was pulling so hard, I couldn't hold him anymore. He just exploded turning for home.''

Affirmed Success faded to fourth, followed by 2-1 favorite Left Bank, Grey Memo, Burning Roma, Voodoo, D'wildcat and Wake At Noon. Dayton Flyer was scratched.

``He started backing up about the quarter-pole ... he didn't fire his best,'' said Todd Pletcher, who trains Left Bank.

Swept Overboard, who shipped in from California, won for the first time in three starts this year, and for the eighth time in 18 career races. Trainer Craig Dollase did not make the trip.

Before the Met Mile, Swept Overboard had run only twice at seven furlongs and lost both times. This was only his second race outside California, having finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Belmont in October.

``I felt like he liked the track off that race, and that he just needed some racing luck,'' owner John Reddam said. ``Every race, he's been charging at the wire, so I felt more distance would help him.''

Swept Overboard returned $24.60, $9.20 and $6.30. Aldebaran, with Jerry Bailey aboard, paid $5.80 and $3.70. Crafty C.T., ridden by Chris McCarron, returned $5.30 for show.

Swept Overboard earned $450,000, boosting his earnings to $1,125,205.

Earlier, Shibboleth led gate-to-wire for a two-length victory over Malabar Gold in the $100,000 Jaipur Stakes.
