HOUSTON, TX. -- Jeremiah Jack kept French Assault from becoming the fourth Breeders' Cup Juvenile starter to come back and win a stakes when he rolled to a commanding five-length win over that one in Saturday night's $150,000 Texan Juvenile* (click here for chart) at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. It was another 3.75 lengths back in third to Private Emblem. The Juvenile was the lone-open company race on a card of nine stakes. The Texas Champions Day program, designed to showcase accredited statebreds, drew an ontrack crowd of 10,482. Handle on the card was $2,856,979. Jeremiah Jack($9.60) raced close to the pace early in the Juvenile, then launched his bid on the final turn and poured it on through the stretch, winning the 1 1/16 miles race for 2-year-olds in 1:44.16. "He made it look easy," said Robby Albarado, who was aboard the winner for trainer Tom Amoss. Jeremiah Jack earned $90,000 for owners Stewart Madison and Clay Querbes to improve his career record to three wins from eight starts and earnings of $154,926.
Lights On Broadway repeats in Star Steve Bourque rode the winner for trainer C.W. Cascio. Lights On Broadway, who also wired the field in last year's Star Of Texas, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.66. Coastalota($5.60) won the night's richest offering for fillies and mares when she drew clear by 2.50 lengths over Holly Sue in the $75,000 Martanza Handicap. Bobby Walker rode the winner for trainer Randy Mayfield.
Chauffe Au Rouge tops turfers Ricky Faul rode the winner, who covered 1 1/8 miles over firm turf in 1:51.67, for trainer Cole Norman. The $30,000 Chauffe Au Rouge earned for the win is being withheld pending a hearing. * In the female turf division, Peppy Priscilla($20.80) rushed past the leaders at the top of the stretch to win the $50,000 San Jacinto by 1.50-lengths over favorite Lampsas County. Jockey Roman Chapa, who proposed to his longtime girlfriend after the race, was aboard the winner for trainer Danny Pish. * Trainer Steve Asmussen swept the night's two sprint races for 2-year-olds when Sly Kona($10.60) overtook 1-5 favorite Miss Ritz by a half-length in the closing strides of $50,000 Bara Lass. She was ridden by Donnie Meche. Two races later, Balkan($15.20) stormed to a 6.75-length win over Onlynurimagination in the $50,000 Groovy. It was a neck back in third to 3-5 favorite Front Nine. Balkan was ridden by Sidney LeJeune, Jr. * Lil Angel and Cowboy Cumbia, two 3-year-olds who took on older rivals in the sprint divisions, each used front-running tactics to claim victory. In the $50,000 Yellow Rose, Lil Angel($11) rolled to an authoratative 4.75-length win over favorite Miss Photogenic. Deirdre Panas was aboard for trainer Gilbert Ciavaglia. Cowboy Cumbia($21.40) made every pole a winning one in the $50,000 Spirit of Texas, running the race's opening five furlongs in 56.95 seconds before going on to a 1.50-length win over Wild Again Again in 1:10.23. Larry Melancon rode the winner for trainer Amos Laborde. | |
