Bailey surpasses $20M in single-season

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Jerry Bailey became the first jockey to surpass $20 million in purse winnings in a year, adding another accomplishment to a Hall of Fame career.

Bailey, 44, reached the milestone in guiding Hap to victory in the $558,500 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile at Keeneland on Sunday. Bailey took the 8-5 favorite five wide on the home turn en route to a 1 3/4-length win.

Bailey's victory aboard Aptitude in the $1 million Jockey Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Saturday put him within reach of the $20 million mark, as he eclipsed his own single-season record of $19,465,376 in 1996.

Bailey, inducted into racing's Hall of Fame in 1995, won the Kentucky Derby with Sea Hero in 1993 and with Grindstone in 1996. He has won the Breeders' Cup Classic four times.
