| Colic clouds decision to run Macho Uno By David Grening Daily Racing Form | |||

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Macho Uno, who was being pointed to Saturday's $300,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown, was battling colic last Saturday night and his connections may wait a week to run him in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont on Oct. 6. "He had a minor bout with colic on Saturday evening, he trained Sunday and Monday, and I'm waiting to breeze him," Orseno said Monday afternoon. "We're re-thinking our plans from Ohio to the Jockey Club Gold Cup, although we are looking into a flight instead of a 10-hour van ride to Ohio." Orseno credited veterinarian Steve Allday, who stayed with and treated Macho Uno for six hours Saturday night. After examining him Sunday morning, Allday told Orseno to jog him and on Monday, Macho Uno galloped. Orseno had planned to work Macho Uno either Sunday or Monday and van him to Cleveland the following day. Macho Uno, who won the Pennsylvania Derby impressively on Sept. 3, breezed 10 days after that race and five days after that he open galloped a strong mile in 1:51, according to Orseno. "I have enough into him to go into the Ohio Derby, but he was a little dehydrated and I put him on the scale and he lost a little bit of weight," Orseno said. "We're looking to see if it's the right thing to run in the Ohio Derby or wait for the Jockey Club." Orseno was also waiting to hear back from the management at Tex Sutton about a possible Thursday flight to Cleveland. While Gary Stevens would ride Macho Uno in the Ohio Derby, Stevens has committed to ride Albert the Great in the Gold Cup. Jerry Bailey, who rode Macho Uno to victory in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, is committed to ride Aptitude in that race. Orseno said he would worry about the rider situation at a later date. | |
