| One-turn mile will suit top Jerome contenders By David Grening Daily Racing Form | |||

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Five of the six horses entered for the $150,000 Jerome Handicap when it was originally scheduled to be run on Sept. 15 were entered back for Saturday when the Grade 2 race will be held at Belmont Park. The race was postponed from last weekend when racing here was canceled because of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Only Iron Mask did not return from the original line-up. He will be pointed to the $100,000 Kingsland Stakes on Sept. 29 at The Meadowlands, trainer Todd Pletcher said. The remaining quintet is an evenly matched group of 3-year-olds that includes Grade 1 winners Burning Roma and Scorpion as well as stakes winners Hero's Tribute, Illusioned, and Express Tour. Burning Roma, who has won five ungraded stakes this year, is coming off a half-length loss to Point Given in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational on Aug. 5. Burning Roma cuts back to a one-turn mile for the first time since last September when he won the Grade 1 Futurity via disqualification. "We had to give him enough time between races because I'm sure I got to the bottom of my horse last race," trainer Tony Dutrow said. "I think a mile around one turn is absolutely ideal for this horse." Hero's Tribute has done his best work around one turn, especially when he won the Grade 2 Peter Pan in May over E Dubai. Hero's Tribute finished last in the Haskell but may loom the main speed in the Jerome. Scorpion is reunited with Jerry Bailey, the only rider to win on the Seattle Slew colt. Bailey last guided Scorpion to victory in the Grade 1 Jim Dandy around two turns at Saratoga, but he has been successful around one turn as well. | |
