Racing programs across the country were canceled on Tuesday after the jet-hijacking attacks in New York and Washington D.C., with some racetracks uncertain what their plans would be for Wednesday and later in the week.

At Belmont Park in New York, which was dark on Tuesday, officials decided to cancel racing on Wednesday.

In Pomona, Calif., officials of the Los Angeles County Fair canceled Tuesday's 11-race program at Fairplex Park and closed the Fair for a day. According to a statement by Fairplex, the cancellation was made "in consideration of the victims and their families of the tragedy - and not in fear of the safety of our guests."

The Fair is 35 miles east of Los Angeles and five miles west of Ontario International Airport, which, like the nation's other airports, was closed Tuesday.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Fairplex Park racing official Neil O'Dwyer said Fairplex planned to resume a normal racing schedule on Wednesday.

In northern California, Bay Meadows officials have scheduled a meeting for Wednesday morning to decide whether to race on Wednesday. But O'Dwyer said that Bay Meadows officials had told him they were preparing to race.

Eastern tracks that canceled live racing on Tuesday included Delaware Park, Finger Lakes, The Meadowlands, Mountaineer Park, and Philadelphia Park.

The Maryland Jockey Club suspended simulcasting at Laurel Park on Tuesday and Wednesday and canceled Pimlico's live racing card for Wednesday.

Arlington Park has canceled racing on Wednesday. Arlington, which is part of Churchill Downs Inc., will remain open for training, as will all other CDI-owned tracks. A decision regarding the remainder of the week's racing schedule will be reached on Wednesday morning.

In Miami, Calder Race Course was closed for simulcasting Tuesday and Wednesday. No live racing was affected. Track officials were scheduled to meet Wednesday to decide whether both live racing and simulcasting would resume on Thursday.

In Michigan, Great Lakes Downs canceled its program Tuesday and will make it up as part of a doubleheader on Oct. 27.

Hoosier Park canceled Tuesday and planned to announce on Wednesday its schedule for the rest of the week.

Louisiana Downs, which is dark on Tuesday and Wednesday, had not decided as of Tuesday afternoon whether it would go ahead with its Thursday program.

In Oklahoma, Remington Park, which was dark Wednesday, was scheduled to resume live racing on Thursday.

In Texas, Sam Houston was scheduled to be dark Tuesday through Thursday and resume racing on Friday.

Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., was dark Tuesday and canceled its Wednesday program, which now will likely be run on Thursday.

Emerald Downs in Washington will decide on Wednesday whether to run on Thursday.
