Flute dominates in Alabama

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Flute didn't do it the way trainer Bobby Frankel expected, but the way she wanted to in dominating six other 3-year-old fillies in the Alabama on Saturday at Saratoga.

Trainer Bobby Frankel's Flute won Saturday's $750,000 Alabama Stakes.
"I didn't expect her to be on the lead," Frankel said. "Edgar Prado took a hold of her, but she just went to the lead."

Flute took the lead from Dancethruthedawn only 100 yards after the start and she was still there at the finish, 4 3/4 lengths ahead of Exogenous, with long shot Two Item Limit another 2 3/4 lengths back and 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Dancethruthedawn.

"She ran a great race," Frankel said. "When she gets to the front she just plays around."

Flute played around the 1 1/4 miles on a fast track under scale weight of 121 pounds in an excellent 2:01 4-5.

"I'm in love with this filly," Frankel said. "She never lets me down. She's a champion."

Frankel said he wasn't sure what is next for the daughter of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, but "I just might wait for the Breeders' Cup (Juvenile on Oct. 27 at Belmont Park)."

In taking over the leadership of the 3-year-old filly division, Flute paid $3.70, $2.80 and $2.50, and earned $450,000 from $750,000 purse for Juddmonte Farms.

Exogenous returned $10.60 and $6.70, and Two Item Limit paid $6.90.

Completing the order of finish were Real Cozzy, Tweedside and Unrestrained.

The victory before a crowd of 35,615 on a sunny afternoon was the fourth in six starts for Flute, who raced only once as a 2-year-old.

In her stakes debut, she finished second to the highly regarded Golden Ballet, now retired because of injury, in the Santa Anita Oaks. Flute won the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on May 4 at Churchill Downs, then did not race again until she prepped for the Grade 1 Alabama by winning an allowance race July 27 at Saratoga.
