Dollar Bill goes far in Jockey Club

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Dollar Bill, reserved early by Calvin Borel, made a bold move in the final turn before edging clear from favored Holiday Thunder in the $218,800 Brown & Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on Saturday, closing day at Churchill Downs.

Dollar Bill, owned by Gary and Mary West and trained by Dallas Stewart, saved ground for most of the 74th running of the 1 1/16-mile KJC Stakes before Borel swung him out late in the turn. He continued resolutely to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Holiday Thunder, with Gift of the Eagle another six lengths back in third.

As the second choice in a field of six colts and geldings, Dollar

Bill paid $6.60 after finishing in 1:47.18 over a sloppy track.

Percy Hope sprung to the early lead with Holiday Thunder, the 6-5 choice ridden by Shane Sellers, poised in perfect striking position. After Holiday Thunder inherited the lead late in the far turn, Borel moved Dollar Bill outside with real purpose.

Unbridled Time, compromised by a poor start, finished fourth, followed by Vroom Vroom and Percy Hope. Meetyouathebrig, the program favorite off his victory in the Iroquois Stakes on Breeders' Cup Day, was scratched midway through the card. "I just decided to come out because of the sloppy racetrack," said trainer Elliott Walden.

Stewart said Dollar Bill, a Kentucky-bred son of Peaks and Valleys, would be shipped with his stable to the Fair Grounds, with the Louisiana Derby being the main spring objective. The victory was the second in five starts for Dollar Bill, who earned $135,656.
