Tiznow looks 'Good' enough for BC Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. - Tiznow's hard-fought victory in Sunday's $418,000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita was met with a difference of opinions from his connections.

Tiznow, tracked by Captain Steve, stayed on the rail and pulled clear in the final furlong to win by a half-length.
As owners Michael Cooper and Cecilia Straub-Rubens and trainer Jay Robbins grow closer to a decision on whether to pay a $360,000 supplement to make him eligible for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4, they will reflect on Tiznow's win over Captain Steve before an ontrack crowd of 16,632.

"This is the chance of a lifetime and if the horse is willing, we'll take it," Cooper said.

Robbins was more guarded with his assessment. "That was a pretty taxing race," Robbins said.

Ridden by Chris McCarron, Tiznow ($4.40) led throughout, running 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.38. Staying on the rail, he set fractions of :23.34 and :47.12 seconds, leading by a length on the backstretch.

Tiznow was tracked by Captain Steve to the quarter-pole and the two nearly drew even in midstretch. Tiznow, staying on the rail, pulled clear in the final furlong to win by a half-length.

"I think he got a little tired, but I'll have to talk it over with Chris," Robbins said.

The victory, which made Tiznow the first 3-year-old to win the Goodwood in the race's 19-year history, came 15 days after he won the Grade 1 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs in a track-record performance. Overall, Tiznow has won 4 of 8 starts and $965,550.

Euchre, who won the Grade 2 Bel Air Handicap at Hollywood Park in July, finished third, followed by Sir Bear, Big Ten, River Keen and Bagshot.

Cooper said he will speak with Robbins and McCarron at midweek to check on Tiznow's condition before finalizing a decision on the Breeders' Cup.

"Otherwise, we'll see him in the Strub," he said, referring to the stakes for 4-year-olds run at Santa Anita in February.
